Can anyone tell me why I have a new symbol next to the battery indicator?

Thanks for the post. It isn’t the wallpaper. After unlocking, this symbol floats into position from the top rhs of the screen

Still not sure what you're talking about. I see cellular strength, WiFi, and the battery. The small white blob coming from the right side of the battery icon appears to be part of your wallpaper.
