I accidently dialed one of my contacts in my old iPhone 6+ (iOS v12.4.8), but it was in airplane mode. I thought airplane mode was supposed to block phone calls. Did I miss something?

Yes, all cellular calls would be blocked because of Airplane Mode ... but maybe WiFi was active even though Airplane Mode was ON. The call you made might have been a WiFi call!

Yes, it does! But you can turn WiFi ON even though your iPhone is in Airplane Mode. Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
Also, in Airplane Mode ON, if you had turned WiFi ON, then toggled Airplane Mode OFF-ON-OFF, the WiFi would not disconnect!
