Changing apple id on iphone - claims it already in use as Notification address

I'm trying to change my apple id from aol.com to a gmail.com address.

Initially I had my Notification email set to the required gmail.com address, so I've deleted the gmail Notification address. That seems to have worked as its deleted from my "contactable at" list.

However I still can't change my apple id to my gmail address as it claims I'm trying to change it to a "Notification address" ...but Ive deleted that !

"Your new apple id cant be the same as your notification email address" ...but I don't have a notification email address now !

Help please !
