Mac IPv6 issues

Whenever my Mac is connected to an IPv6 address, the Wi-Fi doesn't work. When my Mac is connected to an IPv4 address, the Wi-Fi does work. Periodically, the Mac switches (or gets switched) to an IPv6 address and my internet stops working. The only way to force my Mac to reconnect to an IPv4 address is to manually reboot my router or wait a while. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my router or with my Mac, but is there a way I can prevent macOS from ever connecting to an IPv6 IP address? I've tried contacting Apple and they say to contact the ISP. I tried contacting the ISP and they had no idea (Optimum) and only wanted to just send someone to come look at the router.

Hi samtfischer,

Thanks for posting! We see you're running into an issue with Wi-Fi and IPv6 addresses on your Mac, and you've done some troubleshooting already. We'd like to see if we can offer any additional assistance.

Have you tried creating a new network location to see if that helps? You can do this by clicking Apple menu () > System Preferences > Network. Then, click + and select "Wi-Fi" under Interface and create a new location. Then, click the gear icon below the left-hand column and drag the newly-created Wi-Fi location to the top. Then, click Apple menu () > Restart, connect to your usual network, and see if that helps: How to use network locations on your Mac

Depending on how that goes, you may also want to try testing to see if you can replicate this issue in a newly-created administrator account. This would help rule out a few possible user account issues: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Does the issue occur in a new account? Let us know!

Cheers.
