Activation Lock on found IPad

I found an iPad detailing a car and it’s activation locked. I would like to find out who’s it is so I can return it. Or get it unlocked if I can’t find the owner.

Without the Apple ID and Password, there is no way that you can open that iPad. Activation Lock is a theft prevention feature. We can't help you and Apple won't help. Best to turn the device over to the Police.

Perhaps the owner of the iPad is that of the car that you are “detailing”. That would be the obvious route to follow in returning the iPad to its rightful owner.

The iPad, if Activation Locked, will not provide details of the email address - other than the slimest of clues intended for the owner of the device.

At any rate, that iPad is of no use to you - and never will be.

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be turned off:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, or unless you can secure the cooperation of the previous owner, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. Without documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple won’t assist - and nobody here will be able to help you.
