AppleScript Disappearing/Simultaneous Numbers corruption?

Hey,

I'm running Catalina 10.15.7, just updated 2-3 days ago.

I have a Numbers error and an AppleScript problem. Now I already fixed the issue, me thinks, but I'm not sure what caused it.

So I have a spreadsheet. I've cleared it of most errors, replaced all lookups with index matches, etc. - I've tried to keep it as clean as I can, with only a dozen instances of volatile functions. Ram use, with just Numbers running stays up 70-80% or more, with 8 gb of RAM. I downloaded a ram manager a while ago to clear it when it gets up there. Because once it gets higher it never comes down. Even when I close everything. And I can't continually restart the computer while I'm working, especially for it to get to the same 70-80% usage as soon as I start working again. It's just gonna beachball, freeze, and then I get to hope that I can force quit it without losing data.

I only use one AppleScript for the spreadsheet, as a shortcut key to input time. I've probably been using it for at least 2-3 years without any problems. I was lazy when I made it, it only responds to input of Table 1 of the open spreadsheet.

Last night, the last time I used the function was 11:25 PM, seemingly after 12 AM it stopped functioning. First, I got an error similar to "The action “Run AppleScript” encountered an error: “Numbers got an error: Can’t set selection range of table 1 of active sheet of document 1 to "Friday, October 9, 2020 at 4:24:44 PM".” Then I got nothing when I pressed the shortcut again. Checked the workflow, it wouldn't work on that specific tab anymore. It did work on other tabs, of which the one I was using was a duplicate, but only when I ran it from automator.

There are a couple problems.

One, I noticed a "wireless signal" sound coming from the computer, not like a modem, but that high pitch dot-dash beeping. I went through unplugging everything around me to find it like a nutcase. Also, the shortcut stopped working, and the script (along with other scripts) was gone from the "Settings/Keyboard" menu. I shutdown the computer and two scripts reappeared, though not the one I was looking for. Then I almost internet reformatted myself, before I finally reset the PRAM, lol. The script came back after the PRAM reset - under the keyboard settings, but without it's shortcut intact.

I retyped a new shortcut key. The script still wouldn't run by shortcut key, or automator on the problem tab. So, I duplicated the tab, tried to run it, with no luck again. On a whim, I changed the applescript to run in Table 2, and it worked on the tab I was having the error message with, and it shouldn't have, because I was still in Table 1, there's only one table. So, I guesstimated somehow Numbers changed the table from Table 1 to Table 2. At that point I copied the problem sheet, and duplicated an older sheet, cleared it, pasted over, and reformatted 250 rows. I rewrote the AppleScript back to the original Table 1, and it's working as normal again.

So, my thing is is any of this indicative of a bigger problem coming? Hardware? Software? Anything else I should check out?

It is concerning that you need a third-party RAM manager. Maybe it is clearing things from RAM that it should not?

With just a few apps open like Safari, Numbers, and Activity Monitor (but numerous background processes going on), my MacBook uses at least 7.5GB. Numbers is currently about 230MB. 8GB seems to be on the low side of what is necessary these days if you don't want it swapping to disk.

In the past, if RAM usage was going up for no apparent reason, it meant a program was not releasing memory like it was supposed to. I don't know if that is still possible with modern operating systems and compilers and all that but I think I would be looking into what apps you have running that could be causing problems.

You might open up the Console app and browse through the logs for problems.
