I'm having a hard time to activate my iPad. It keep rejecting my apple ID even though I reset my password

activate an ipad 3 I am an apple user I got an ipad 3 from my son I cannot use it because it should be activated. when I put my apple ID and password it rejects them. It needs the ID and password that were used upon setting it up which was done long ago. How can I resolve this problem? Help please
