Gray lock on a black screen upon startup?

What does it mean when I turn on my Mac and there’s a black screen with a gray lock?

That icon / symbol means that there is a firmware lock on your system. What you need is the password to that lock. You will need contact the previous owner or the seller / provider of your MacBook and get that password. The firmware lock is generally placed by employers, on their issued computers, as a security measure to protect against theft of data. In the end, anyone can put a firmware lock on their system.
