MacBook not responding

My Mac is not responding. I shut down and rebooted, a log appeared showing it loading files. 2 hours later the log went away. Now I can't connect to the internet on it, or launch applications. When I selected a file from a folder it took 20 minutes to open in Word. Any suggestions on what I need to do to?
