Preview won't save the highlights I add to a PDF

So, here is what happens: I open a PDF on my Macbook with Preview. I highlight parts of the text and when I'm done I save the PDF manually. Then I close the PDF document. When I open the same PDF again either most or all of my highlights are gone. I already tried ''File > Revert To > Browse All Versions'' and ''File > Revert To > Last Saved'' but my highlighted PDF is not there. And this has been happening more and more. It drives me mad! Right now, my only alternative is some kind of insanely expensive PDF editing program. Preview was just right for everything I needed to do!

I hope there's someone who can help me with this problem.

There are those of us that have no issues with Preview's annotations retention, and occasionally there are those, like yourself, that do. As fellow users, none of us can fix Preview, and you might be better off using either the free Skim product, or even the free Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, which keeps current with evolving PDF standards.

Hey, thanks for the free software suggestions, that's very helpful. :) At least I can continue studying now. I do hope the issue with Preview can be resolved some day, either spontaniously or because someone has a solution. But for now, thanks so much!
