The iTunes application should recognize it. It will not be accessible to Windows or other applications.

Depending on your model (3rd or 4th generation), the device may need its own power. Apple TV (2nd generation) should not have its power cord connected.
Verify that your USB cable supports data transfer, i.e. not just a charging cable.

In iTunes, you should see the Apple TV summary page. If you don't see the Apple TV summary page, click the Apple TV icon in the upper-left corner.

You can restore Apple TV models up to 4th generation through a computer with iTunes.

Thank you. I’m not seeing any recognition that the ATV is plugged into the laptop. I’ve tried unplugging and replugging but the laptop isn’t connecting or showing that it’s connected.

After going through 10 usb cords, the last one was a data transfer cable. Thank you very much!
