iMac (24-inch, Early 2009)
my early 24 inch 2009 imac has a thunderbolt port. I would like to use this old 24 inch imac as a monitor for my ipad. First is the Thunderbolt port the proper port to connect to if it's an option? Can i connect my Apple ipad to that port and use the 2009 imac as a monitor for my ipad. This is of course assuming I get the proper adapter, thunderbolt to C cable. Thanks wilsmac
Thunderbolt connections were not introduced on iMacs until 2011, what you probably have is a mini display port connection which looks identical to the uneducated like a Thunderbolt port.
A 24" 2009 is too old to be used as an external display. If you had a more up-to-date iMac and a qualifying iPad you could use SideCar. Please read the SideCar system requirements in Sidecar
Thanks for that. What confused me as a novice Mac user was after clicking "About This Mac" and then "More"; I got the hardware list and it listed Thunderbolt. But after you replied, I clicked on "Thunderbolt" and "NO HARWARE INSTALLED" appeared. Thanks again, time for a newer used Imac that can be used as also a monitor. Any suggestions on model years? Thanks
Totally okay, what you have is a real antique and is now getting pretty far removed meaning it will NOT run current versions of Mac OS. This also means it can only run pretty old software. Please do not spend any money on it.
If you want a more up-to-date Mac and are not ready to invest in a new one then you may want to consider a more up-to-date model that is used. That being said, NEVER EVER buy from E-Bay or Amazon buy from a reputable source such as Macsales.com or EveryMac.com or the best would be to buy a refurbished Mac directly from Apple. Their refurbs are identical to new, offer the same 1 year warranty, are eligible for AppleCare and can save hundreds of $ over a new one.
Just some thoughts.
Thanks, was only going to keep it as a monitor, but since thats not an option, Time to move on. Thanks for the suggestions on some alternate sources for refurbished imacs, will definitely look into it. Thanks again for your quick response and valued guidance.
No, a Mac of that vintage wouldn't have a Thunderbolt port of any generation. The various connection posts can be seen below.
Thanks, that was helpful. wilsmac
Thanks for the heads up on posting serial nos. I'm obviously new to the discussions group and won't make that mistake again. Much appreciated, Thx. wilsmac
Your welcome and good luck.
If the computer runs, click the Apple symbol in the upper left of the display and click About this Mac. You can also use https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201634
Also, NEVER EVER post personal information such as serial numbers, e-mail addresses etc on a public forum.
