I was having trouble and only one of my airpods was connecting. So I tried forgetting the device and resetting the airpods. When I was holding down the reset button, instead of it flashing white it just stayed a solid white color.

You need to hold that reset button for about 15 seconds. It should then flash amber.
AirPods will not reset per instructions
