what are "other volumes" and why are they taking up so much space? 😳

i just bought this macbook air last month and already the storage is almost full but it's mostly "other volumes" and i dont know what they are, why they take up so much space, how they got there, or how to remove them?

One of the ‘other volumes’ is Macintosh HD - Data, which is all the stuff in your user folder(s).
