Continual (months) crashing of my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018) running High Sierra (10.13.6)

I am finally getting fed up with my Mac crashing literally every day (beach-ball spinning) in the middle of working. I am a 30+ year veteran-Mac user (scientist) who has been loving Macs all this time until this. I have tried various fixes for this I found on the web (no, I don't have an active service contract), and no improvement.

What I want to know, is if I buy a new MacBook Pro, is the newest operating system better? It couldn't be worse. If it has the same performance issues, I will certainly buy a personal PC of some type: I have several I use in the laboratory, and don't really like them, but...

Thanks I will get back to you in more detail tomorrow it is getting late here.

First thing is you have McAfee installed. Macs do not need software like this

there are no viruses that affect the mac, this could be the source of your troubles

as it probably flags up files for deletion which may in fact be system files.

Apps like that are not necessary they just use up system resources for no

benefit. Go to the McAfee website and get the full uninstall instructions.

Simply deleting the app will not do.

Also looks like you have adware/ malware from 2013 install the free version

of https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

I would also consider reinstalling macOS High Sierra so download the installer app from here,

How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

Go to Section 4 and click on Get macOS High Sierra.

This will connect you to the App Store High Sierra page

it should say Get or Download.

This will download Install macOS High Sierra.app to your Applications folder.

Make a bootable USB installer using these instructions.

How to create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support

You can create the USB now if you want and await any further instructions tomorrow.

Doing an in place reinstall of the OS will reset system files and caches and should improve your

macs performance. Note this is not a clean install where you erase the mac and start afresh.

But leave that till tomorrow.

Delete these files & restart..

/Library/LaunchAgents/de.novamedia.VodafoneDeviceObserver.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.ssm.Eupdate.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.ssm.ScanFactory.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.ssm.ScanManager.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.virusscan.fmpd.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.agent.macompat.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.agent.macmn.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.agent.ma.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mcafee.menulet.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mcafee.reporter.plist

Delete these 3 files & Restart...

  /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.easeus.dataprotectbackup.plist

  ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.ARM.***.plist

  ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist

~ tilde indicates hidden Local Library

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

  1. From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
  2. In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

Glad it's doing better, but...

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mcafee.reporter.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mcafee.menulet.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mcafee.virusscan.fmpd.plist

Safe Boot, (holding Shif startup), can you Trash them in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Get rid of McAfee.

Get rid of McAfee.

Get rid of McAfee.

Get rid of McAfee.

Get rid of McAfee.

They force us to use McAfee at work, and it is far worse than its cure. All the Mac users would throw it out in a heart beat if they could, but the Windows based security group has the authority and they do not care about productivity, they just want to make sure the corporate network is secure.

Is the mac yours or the Universities, inform them of their poor choice in getting you to install software that serves no benefit and is more likely to cause problems than solve them.

Which OS are you actually running on your mac. You have stated in your title that you are on macOS High Sierra

if you are on a later version it could be macOS Mojave or macOS Catalina, even so the App Store should allow

you to download it. But if you are running a newer version of macOS I do not want you to be installing an older

version as this will cause even more problems.

Please be careful what you allow other people to see in your screenshots. I can see your e-mail address and name, these shouldn't be included in case other unscrupulous people try to contact you.

I will ask for the screenshot to be removed.

I will reply here tomorrow.

Thanks to all for your help! I have done what I can so far, and re-ran the Etrecheck (attached). I turned off McAfee, as I still haven't been able to uninstall it (I am waiting to hear back from our IT people, as I can't find an uninstall program on McAfee's website). I also am unable to get the App store to allow me to download a new install version of High Sierra. However, I think I successfully got a new hosts file loaded (through the Terminal app). I also got rid of as many of the bad files you folks identified as I could. And removed as many of the 32-bit programs as I was comfortable with (I do use the remaining, or they are Microsoft ones or Apple ones that I was nervous to remove). Best, K

Very weird: I go to delete those and drag to trash or just tell the finder to move to trash, the system asks for my admin passwords and bang - no joy - they don't delete. Probably an insidious McAfee feature.

My IT people have also tried to tell me how to uninstall McAffee with Terminal commands, and that doesn't work either ("uninstallation failed"). So, now I am going to get one of them on the phone with me to help.

Have to say, all you folks are great with this help! Haven't had a beachball yet for the last couple of days (although admittedly I am spending more time talking to you and implementing your advice than actually working with apps as usual...)

We'll see what happens!

Oct 16, 2020 12:25 PM in response to BDAqua

I tried to find those files and cannot (even in the ~/Library hidden location).

I re-booted in safe mode (which took >8 min to boot; I timed it) - and still cannot find those files. I assume because it took so long to boot in safe mode there are still hidden issues...

FYI: yesterday when the IT person at my university helped me, we couldn't uninstall McAfee except for in Safe Mode. It also took about the same time to boot in Safe Mode then (but I didn't realize it would take so long, and neither did the person helping me, so I didn't time it).

I can't find any McAfee files on this computer anymore...

Thanks!

Oct 17, 2020 12:36 PM in response to Eau Rouge

Thanks for the info about safe mode - I don't know why my IT people seemed surprised by the long time, but they were.

I tried to find uninstall instructions for McAfee on the web and tried to use them and they didn't work (I don't remember the exact details now).

I did first look for the uninstall program on my Mac, and it wasn't (and still isn't) there. There is no way that I am going to install that program again, just in uninstall it - I do have to work on other things sometime!!

And I will let you know if I still have problems with the Mac freezing - so far so good, but I have been spending most of my time troubleshooting and not working over the last few days, so don't have the data yet.

Thank you again for all your help.
