How to transfer footage from old Panasonic VDR D100 to imovie on Mac book air 2020 (using dvd-r in camera)

I recently decided to start using an old Panasonic VDR D100 that was lying around the house and want to transfer footage over to a new Mac Book Air using a USB cable. However I've had no success in that. I am using a DVD-R to record the footage. When I turn on the camera when it is connected to the Mac it says something about an AC adapter but not sure if that would be much use as I imagine it should just work with a simple usb cable as I'm using. My main aim is to transfer the footage to iMovie to try and edit it. I've tried switching on the camera when in iMovie and the photo app and my Mac isn't even recognising that the camera is connected to it.

The reference to AC adapter is not linked to usb cable.

The camcorder is telling you to connect it to the AC power supply ( power from wall socket).

Looks as though you have to remove battery to access the connection .

The manual talks about using the software that comes with the cam' to download to a Mac.

Chances are that software will not work with modern Macs.

The disc in the camcorder would contain files in MPEG format ( probably VOB files). These cannot be directly imported into iMovie but if you can access them, i.e. copy them onto your Mac, then they should be able to be converted using Handbrake, it is safe to use and free.

The camcorder is basically a player /burner, so the task is to get the Mac to "see" this external player/burner.
