Full disc space on a new MacBook pro

I tried installing Adobe Creative application on my Macbook only to find that the discs were already full (I've had it a week). It looks like I duplicated all of my photos from iCloud onto my Mac. The only thing is that I can only access these photos by clicking the Photos icon. I'm worried if I delete these from my laptop I will inadvertently delete the photos from my iCloud. I may be being paranoid. Is there a safe easy way to do this so I can clear up space. Its almost 5GB that's being used.
