Update a Macbook Air 2015

I have the macbook air from 2014 or 2015, I need to download Microsoft Word but it will not let me because I don't have the most recent update when I try to update my MacBook but it will not allow me to update it when I click update. What do I do?

What version of macOS are you running now and what version macOS are you trying to upgrade too. How much empty disc space is available on internal drive. If upgrading it will require at least 20 + GB empty space.
