can i charge iphone 12 with USB-A to lightning, so that i don’t need to buy new stuff to charge it with USB-C?

Yes you can. The connection to the phone is still Lightning.

The main difference is using a newer USB-C cable+18W charger will charge your phone faster.

New device include a lightning to USB-C cable. It's faster than most others but you can use older cables.
