IOS (mail ?) cannot verify server identity

IOS 14.0.1 iPad Mini

My ISP recently changed mail servers. I updated my mail settings and everything

seemed to work fine for two days. Then IOS Mail began complaining that it

couldn't verify the old server identity. I've done all the normal re-checking of

configurations, rebooting, and removing the account and re-installing it. Strangely

enough the account with the NEW settings is working but Mail is still trying

to validate a certificate from an old account.

I could try to set up Wireshark to see if it is actually trying to contact the old server

but I doubt that is the problem. On a MAC, I can go into keychain and elsewhere

and DELETE all references to the old mail server and it's certificates.

How do I delete all old certificates and mail servers on IOS ?

iPad mini 4, iPadOS 14

It turns out that I had part of the answer already. I had successfully changed my primary email servers with no difficulty but left the ones that I rarely use unchanged. It turns out that IOS checks all "active" email servers and attempts to login to check for mail.

In any event, while trying to check for mail from these rarely used accounts, IOS was delivered a certificate with a SubjectName different from what it expected. Once I changed the configs for these accounts, everything got better.

On the other hand, it would have been nice if the error identified the exact mail account. I would have solved this quickly if I had been pointed to the offending account(s).

Hello Happy Mac Sound,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you are having issues setting up an email account with the new settings from your provider. We would recommend taking a look at the following article to start:

Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If you need to, you can delete the email account and set it up again. Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > select the account and then delete account.

Best regards.
