Connect your case and phone to a charger.
Connect your headphones and listen to something for at least a minute.
Put the headphones back into the case.
Put the phone down with the case next to it.
Come back in an hour and see if it updated.

Apple has not provided steps on how to update the firmware.

You cannot.
You may encourage the firmware update by pairing your AirPods to your iPhone.
