How to detect phishing?

This morning I opened an email which was on top of my list of email in my personal gmail account. The subject was something related to loan and hence I opened just the email. The moment I opened it from my iPhone a blue window popped up and the email disappeared. Is this a phishing activity or spyware/malware being installed into my iPhone? How to detect that or what should I do?
