How to add files to VLC on an iPad from a MacBook using macOS Catalina

Be sure both devices have the latest OS versions..

Connect the iPad to a MacBook USB port.

Open a Finder window on the MacBook. Scroll down until you see your iPad and select it.

The Finder window will now show your iPad with a sets of tabs at the top with the GENERAL tab selected.

Select the FILES tab.

A list of apps installed on the iPad will be displayed.

Scroll down and locate the VLC folder.

Open another Finder window on your MacBook.

Select a video on the MacBook you want to add to the VLC library and drag it directly on top of the VLC folder. You can twirl down the triangle to see any folders or files already in the VLC library.

You can only drag the video on top of the VLC folder not into any sub-folders.

If you want to organize your videos in the VLC library you can do that on the iPad by opening the FILES app. Select ON MY IPAD from the list of locations and now you can move files by dragging and dropping onto existing folders or create new folders.

Now open the VLC app and select the VIDEO tab at the bottom and all your video thumbnails will be shown.

TIP: If you have SRT files for some videos...create a folder for a video and drag the video and its accompanying SRT file into the same folder. When you play the video from the VLC app then select the SRT file using the caption icon in the lower right corner of the VLC app once the video starts playing. Usually if you have a single SRT folder it will be selected already by default.
