SENT A TEXT MESSAGE & IT WENT TO EMAIL ADDRESS WHY?

I sent a text message to a contact that I message frequently with no problem. They let me know that it went to their email address. I deleted the message composed a new one and it showed the email address in the field. Why and what do I do to prevent this?

Greetings DRR84,

It sounds like when you send someone a text message it’s going to their email and not their phone number. We know how important having a working messaging app is for you. You’re in the right place to find a resolution.

First check to see if the phone number still appears for that contact in the Contacts app. If it doesn't, edit the contact to include their phone number: Edit contacts on iPhone. Next try removing the contact and readding it: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

  • Which iPhone model are you using and which iOS version is it running?
  • Does this occur with any of your other contacts?

Cheers!

DRR84,

Thanks for the additional information regarding your contact issue.

Please update the iPhone to the latest iOS version 14.1. Then test it to see if the issue has been resolved. If you're still having the issue, then please reach out to our AppleCare phone support team via this link: Get Support.

As with any update, it's always a good idea to create a backup beforehand: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

How to update your iOS device: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Take care!

I deleted the contact & this added back as you suggested. The first time it went to the phone #. Then I tried again and it showed the email with a checkmark by it and the phone # below. I changed the checkmark to the phone #. Backed out and tried again and it chose the phone #. So far I haven't had this problem with any other contacts.

I have an iPhone 7 running IOS 13.7.

Thank you for your help!
