App Store iMovie stuck in Accept and will not install.

I need to reinstall iMovie on a 2011 Macbook Pro. When I go to purchases, I see iMovie at the top of the list. Instead of "Install" the button says "Accept" with the description:

"To receive future updates, the bundled application will be assigned to your Apple ID. A unique hardware identifier from your computer must be sent to Apple to verify eligibility."

When I click "Accept," it asks for my Apple ID. When I enter it successfully the wait icon spins for a short time, and nothing happens. No error, no installation, just still sitting in "Accept" state.

I have changed my Apple ID password several times now, but no change. I cant remove it or install it.

What's the deal Apple?

When you say “reinstall” that means that you either have the app installed on your Mac and want to reinstall it, or you had it on your computer at one time in the past and want to reinstall it. Although I guess that the “accept” designation might imply that it hadn’t been installed st any point in time. In any event, try the procedure anyway, skipping the trash step.

Apple "installed" it with the OS upgrade. Apple then "broke" it when I purchased Apple Pro apps licenses, attempted to install Final Cut Pro X, but discovered that the MacBook pro model I was installing on was not compatible with Metal graphics and would never be able to run it. Now iMovie is missing and cannot be installed.

The procedure you outlined details items that do not exist to take actions on. I dug around in the system folders and hit some stragglers that were left but still no luck.

I have a feeling that the forced obsolescence Apple keeps going to court for and paying settlements on will apply to this scenario also at some point, but now that a new MacBook Pro costs 3x what they did 5 years ago for cheaper hardware, the settlements and legal fees are just built into the new products rather than taking care of the customers.

OS X is now far less capable than Linux with the exception of a few key industries, and iMovie is pretty terrible to work with, so I have moved this workflow to Raspberry Pi 4B units. It was easier than making OS X behave.

Thanks for your help.

You are welcome. Sorry you couldn't get your iMovie download. You might try contacting Apple Support and discussing the issue with the savvy techs there. It looks like an issue that they should be able to resolve as it appears to be related to licenses that you purchased. If you want to try the Apple Support route, click on the Contact Support item in the upper right hand corner of this forum's screen and navigate to a place where you can enter your phone number.

Also, it is not necessary that you actually have iMovie 10 on your computer, but only that you had it on your Mac at one time but perhaps deleted it. So you can skip the step of dragging your version into the trash. Just sign in to the app store and go to your purchases.
