We have always owned this Ipad since we bought it from Verizon. However, the employee that started all these accounts passed and we have no idea what was used for icloud account. Is there anyway to get around this if we can show proof we have always had it. We reset it but its locked on activation lock. We have several other ipads that i dont want this to happen with.

The only thing you can do since the employee that set it up is no longer available is to take the original proof of purchase, since you state the business purchased it and your identification from the business to a physical Apple Store to have it wiped. As far as the balance of them, they should not be activated with individual Apple IDs, but use MDM to manage all of the company's devices so you are in control of them.
