My iPad I’d 5 years old. What is the button to the right of the 2 volume buttons for?

What is the button used for that is next to my 2 volume buttons on a 5 year old iPad?

Assuming that you have an original first generation iPad Air, as suggsted by the tags appended to your post, adjacent to the volume buttons is a side-switch - which slides between two positions.

In later versions of iOS, including iOS12 (this being the final major version of iOS compatible with the iPad Air1), the switch function is confurable. The switch can either Mute all sound on the iPad - or can set the screen Rotation Lock.

The Side Switch unction can be set in iPad Settings:

Settings > General > [Use Side Switch To] Lock Rotation | Mute

I hope this information helpfully solves the mystery of the extra button.
