iPhone 7 Google maps delay on bluetooth

I use my iPhone 7 with Google Maps in both cars, connecting via bluetooth and set up as a bluetooth phone call. It has worked fine like this for years.

Recently both cars started missing the first second or so of the voice directions. e.g instead of saying "In 300 yards turn left" she says "...yards turn left". It's very frustrating.

I recently changed ISP and now have wifi calling turned on on the phone but I don't think it's that. I've tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

It still works fine if I have music playing via bluetooth in the cars so it seems to be a delay starting bluetooth or waiting until the link is established before starting the message.

Any ideas?

Hello amayson,

Being able to connect to your Bluetooth radio, and use the voice directions offered by the iPhone is extremely important, and you've come to a great place for help. If you're having issues only with the Google Maps app, and no other audio sources when paired to your vehicles Bluetooth radio try the steps outlined in the following article.

If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won't open

If you're having the issue with multiple applications we would recommend restarting your device, ensuring it's updated, and also forgetting then repairing to the Bluetooth connection for those radios.

Restart your iPhone

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

To forget and pair with you vehicles radios you may have to revert to your vehicles owners manuals for the steps on how to forget the connection through the radio itself, and for steps to pair back to the radio.

To forget the connection on the iPhone you can go in to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the 'i' next to the Bluetooth connection, then tap Forget This Device. Then follow the steps specific to the radio to pair the iPhone back.

Have a great day!

to Apple Support, thank you for the below information, in this thread you'll see that nobody is talking about CarPlay. Do we have to buy a new car to have CarPlay to have our GPS is work properly?

We all know about Bluetooth, that means we have to play music through our phones.

Why can it be fixed as to play through the car system as it was before? You're endangering peoples lives By having them take their eyes off the road, due to the maps not being able to give the full directions, Since apples update

Apple, you have the ability to fix this! It's been months, let's get it done.

this is from Apple support:

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with audio from map apps being delayed when connected to your car system. We are happy to share information that may help.

If you're using CarPlay, take a look at the steps here and give those a try: If you need help with CarPlay.

You may also want to try the steps under "Connect using Bluetooth

Thanks. Every support rep I've talked to has recommended re-formatting and I'll try not to let them talk me into any of that since I've already:

  1. re-formatted my phone twice,
  2. spent 2 -3 hours going to the Apple store "Genius Bar"
  3. had my phone "diagnosed" by Apple at least twice (once at the Apple store) in the past several weeks,
  4. took my car to the dealer twice, etc.,
  5. While at the Infiniti dealer I tried my phone on two different cars at the dealer (cars without CarPlay), one an Infiniti another a Mazda (both used) and had the exact same problem.
  6. turned Bluetooth on and off and uninstalled and reinstalled Apple and Google Maps more times than I can count.

I hope they call and that we see at least some progress toward a resolution.

Hi,

I have an update - I spoke to support staff and the guy I was speaking with had some idea on how to fix it. The fix worked for one trip and now works intermittently. Here is the fix:

1) Go to Google Maps setting

2) Switch-off play voice over bluetooth and wait for 20 seconds. This will automatically turn off "Play as Bluetooth phone call".

3) Switch-on play voice over bluetooth again.

4) Do not turn on "Play as Bluetooth phone call".

Save these changes and come out of settings.

Try on your vehicle. For me it worked. I was on call with Apple support staff and it worked. Then next day morning it did not work again. I fiddled with it and it worked for a while again. So I am not sure what is happening but here is what support staff told me:

Apparently in the new iOS the battery management snaps bluetooth connection to preserve battery if there is no voice transmission. When the setting is "Play as bluetooth phone call" the phone shuts-off BT connection when GMaps isn't giving out voice instructions. When it starts to do so, the connection takes a few seconds to re-establish and that is causing the problem. By the time connection is again established, GMaps voice navigation is already a few words ahead.

I agree it is frustrating. Since it worked for me temporarily I assume between GMaps and Apple they'll come up with some solution. I tried lodging a complain with GMaps as well. I spoke to Google support staff who supports my office but they said GMaps does not have a call-in support. So I am not sure if GMaps is even aware of this problem.

I suggest all of you to please raise complains with Apple. This needs to be fixed and soon.

I just tested with iOS 14.5.1 using both Apple and Google mapping apps.

Initially the problem appears to be fixed. However there is still a problem when 2 turn-by-turn instructions are spaced close together. The second instruction has the beginning words truncated.

My car display has messaging that indicates “incoming call connected” and “call disconnected” when handling radio interrupts from HFP (hands free protocol) phone calls or mapping instructions. It appears the infotainment system does not have time to process both the disconnect and re-connect sequences when two driving instructions are spaced close together.

Hi Randie4620,

Apart from 14.5.1 I changed absolutely nothing except check all the settings I changed in trying to get it working for the last 6 months. Here are the current settings for Apple Maps: -

Sitting at my desk: -

Sitting in the car with a destination set up and navigation started... swipe up from the bottom, and get this: -

Choose Audio and get this (you'll see it's the same screen as sitting at my desk... other than it's now the night screen.. with additional options. 'i10' is the name of the bluetooth connection to the car: -

You will see that it now shows the car (obviously I have previously paired the car and the phone but this has not changed in the six months that this problem has been going on) and gives me the option to select HFP (hands free protocol).

I hope this helps.

None of these settings worked without the problem delay before 14.5.1 come along by the way!

Hi Ryanne77,

Thanks again for your advice.

I have now tried everything you suggested including restoring my phone, reloading the Google Maps app and deleting and resetting the bluetooth links. The problem still exists!

I now think the problem is to do with the handsfree system in the Google Maps App. Other apps that use 'handsfree calling' in the car to communicate by voice wait for a second before talking to me or awaiting a reply. For example: using Siri you can see it initiating a handsfree call before it talks. Google maps starts talking immediately and you cannot hear it until the handsfree 'call' is initiated.

The problem does not happen if a bluetooth link between the phone and the car is already working (eg listening to music) only when a bluetooth link has to be initiated.

In short, I no longer think this is an iPhone problem and I need to find a Google Maps forum to raise this issue on.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi,

I was advised to test my phone with Apple Maps to see if it was the App or the phone and Apple Maps has exactly the same problem: it starts talking while the phone is still establishing a handsfree connection and so misses the first few words of the instruction. It is not a problem with Siri because that establishes a handsfree connection first (you can watch it on the car screen), then beeps and then stats talking.

However, if this happens on more than one app, in two different cars and only started recently (after many years of correct operation before that) it must be an iPhone software problem.

Is this something to do with iOS 14? It started about then and continues in iOS 14.1

Please raise this with Apple Support about Apple Maps.

I have been talking to them (and they are being helpful... it takes time because I have to drive round the village in the car to test after each change!)

However, they tell me that I'm the only one with the problem so they haven't yet accepted it's an iOS14 problem!

If everyone with the problem rings Apple Support they realise will there are many of us.

Hi All,

Update on this question.

I have had a series of calls with Apple Support over the last few weeks, where they have escalated to 'Engineering' and asked me to record and share both my phone screen and my bluetooth connections while driving the car and using Apple Maps.

It seems that 'Engineering' do now accept that there is a real problem but do not have an immediate solution.

The person I have been speaking to from Apple Support (a 'senior supervisor' and a nice guy) suggests that I wait for the next update of iOS and call him back if it doesn't work.

No large company support person would ever admit that their company screwed up, and he didn't, but I wait with bated breath for iOS 14.3 (or maybe 14.4) to see what happens.
