How do you reformat a disc used for time machine backups?
If there are a couple of backups on an external hard drive, it seems impossible or totally tedious to erase all files and use the disc for something else. Is there a quick way?

System Preferences > Time Machine. Uncheck "Back Up Automatically".
The method contained in the instructions provided only takes a minute or so.
Thank you for your reply. I have tried this, but disk utility does not work if the external disk is a time machine backup disk or contains such backups.
FWIW, in order to format a disk that has active Time Machine backups you have to disable Time Machine. Formatting the drive will of course delete all files and backups on the drive.
How?
System Preferences > Time Machine. Uncheck "Back Up Automatically".
