external drives not showing up in sidebar

I have my preferences set for external drives to show on the desktop and the sidebar of the finder. They show on the desktop, but don't show up in the finder. That makes difficult to attach a file from an external drive to an email; I have to copy it to my desktop first. This just happened with one of the recent OS updates, I think. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks -

Click on computer name (first item in locations in the sidebar)

You should see a list of all your local volumes.

Drag whatever you want to locations or favourites.
