i am getting messages that my Mac is infected with several virus and to contact an Apple Care number which I believe is bogus. I want to use a good anti-malware software. Any suggestions?

You don't need, or want any type of AV software. What you need is an ad blocker, which also do a very good job at blocking such redirects.
There are various free ones in the App Store. I use Ka-Block!. It's not one of the best, but it's free and does a pretty good job.
You should never reply or click on those ads . And it would be useful to set up safari browser to block ads
