MP4 file issues

I am having some issues with my MacBook Air 13 and watching MP4 videos. I am able to watch a video a few times through, but without fail, I start having issues with the video. It seems that QuickTime Player and iMovie will drop the video component of a video (giving me a black screen), but continues to play audio. Any idea what is going wrong?

it is odd that the video will work seamlessly, but then will fail after multiple views.

Hello Helpplz1924,

We're here to help with the issue you're experiencing when playing videos on your Mac. We understand that only audio is playing when trying to watch an MP4 file. We have some additional questions to help us better understand and possibly isolate the issue.

Are you only experiencing this issue with one video or multiple videos? If only with one specific video file, try playing a different video file to see if the issue persists.

Are you only experiencing this issue with MP4 files from a specific source? If so, try other MP4 files from a different source and see if the issue persist.

The questions above will help us isolate if the issue might be with the MP4 files.

Let us know what you find.

Cheers!

I haven't seen this kind of issue and don't have a fix for you. But I am curious about the specifics. What macOS? Does this happen repeatedly with all mp4 movies and in other user accounts? Catalina QuickTime Player seems to handle more H.264 and H.265 movies than Mojave (it is more forgiving if the H.264 is 4:2:2 instead 4:2:0 or if H.265 HEVC movie does not have hvc1 tag). Invisor is a great app to point out such codec issues in its comparison mode.
