transferring photos from old computer

transferring photos from old computer

i just got a new imac and wanted to transfer my photos from my old macbook to my new imac. i have everything from my macbook backed up using time machine but i cannot figure out how to retrieve them from time machine and put them onto my new computer.

is there an easier or better way to move all my photos over? And i would like to keep all my photo categories intact when i transfer them.

Alternative ways to move your Library:

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...

But however you do choose to link the two machines...

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.

Then launch iPhoto. That's it.

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

thanks a lot for the help. yeah what i did was just copy over the "iphoto library" icon onto my desktop then put it into the my pictures folder and used as my iphoto library and all is good =)

If you have your iPhoto LIbrary backed up with TM the the following may help:

However in your case just go to the Pictures folder and then enter Time Machine. Then follow the remaining steps.

Hi,

I have also just brought a new imac and I am trying to transfer my photos across from my old hard drive (power book G4, 5 years old). Time machine will not work as the old hard drive is too old for it. I can see and transfer the photos manually from the old hard drive to iphoto 09 but only the originals can be transferred. The edited photos and album data can not be transferred across. As i have 4000 photos I would rather not have to sort them out and edit them all manually again. Any help that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Charlie, I am having the same problem and Apple support says there is no help. Terrance says it is easy and I will try his method but he may not be using Snow Leopard.

Moving an iPhoto Library to a new machine is independent of the version of iPhoto, the version of the OS.
