Time Machine Question

If I buy an external drive larger than my hard drive, will there be extra space available along with the Time Machine backup or does Time Machine take over the whole drive?

Don't put other files on the same drive. One important reason is "where are the backups for those extra files?"

Time machine allows the backups to sprawl, thinning when necessary, but will grow to nearly fill the drive, then prune back by consolidating older backups.
