microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro

I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?

Bought a new 12 pro max for my wife about a week ago. Didn't think about testing it out of the box first before transferring her data over from her old 7 plus. So don't know what IOS version the 12 came with and if the mic was working then or not. We had to update to latest version (14.4) in order to transfer wife's data over and so we did. Transfer went well and everything appeared to be working fine. A few days later wife tried to make a Facebook messenger call with me and I couldn't hear her at all. We then tested FaceTime and tried making phone calls...other couldn't hear a thing...nada. Tested the Voice Memo app and when playing back a recording all we could hear was loud static. To Google we went looking for a solution or to see if others were experiencing similar microphone issues. Low and behold, we found two threads, this one and another at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252186963?page=1

Did all the troubleshooting and even did a factory reset as a new user and issue still there. Download ‎Phone Diagnostics on the App Store (apple.com) as suggested from someone on the other thread, ran it, and the bottom mic FAILED!!! Using a Bluetooth headset works but such an inconvenience. Took the 12 to Apple store and returned that sucker before the 14 days was up. So disappointed to have paid over $1000+ for a phone and the mic doesn't even work! I especially feel sad for my wife as she was really looking forward to the new 12 pro max, and we were going to use it to shoot photos at our upcoming baby shower :( Holding out on getting another 12 until there's an official fix or Apple acknowledges it. Might even have to wait for the 13 or switch over to Android.

Well, as a statement to all who seem to be having various different iterations or similar problems

does anyone really Believe that a brand new Apple iPhone 12 that has any of the above problems shouldn’t be solved by Apple

shutting off features in order to use a particular app seems a bit inconsistent with what Apple is supposed to be selling. A product that works with all apps.

After trying to have a decent video audio conversation with a variety of applications such as FaceTime, WhatsApp, telegram and signal all which I have tried, all failed to degree or another

I also had a daily ongoing discussion with second level Apple support for almost 2 weeks.

their main answer was to “upgrade to the latest iOS”

unfortunately that’s where I started this whole series of problems. A brand new iPhone 12 came out of the box with OS 14.2

I upgraded it to 14.3, and the problem existed

they replaced the phone which started with iOS 14.1 and it has the same problem

I think it’s time Apple stepped up to the plate and solved the problem

Hopefully the new phone resolves your issues. Thank you for the note on the N model number.

The info on the replacement warranty ticket was just fluff by the in store reps.

The audio/vibration setting is for incoming calls to vibrate or make sounds when you get a call, text, voicemail, email, reminder, or other type of notification. Nothing to do with your/our outgoing audio issue.

This new phone is doing the same thing as the first phone. I’d to see if apple will take it back. I had to go thru **** yo get help with the first replacement. I’m wore out with solutions. When I use speaker phone people are telling me I m breaking up but hear them fine. These restores, phone supports and problems aren’t worth $1000.00 phone. Got off the phone with apple support today which was elevated to the engineers support. They set up a call back to me for 4:30 PM. My phone never ring. I’m sitting right here and read an this a message, where trying to call you but phone going straight to voice mail. Phone never rang. Was sitting right here. Unfortunately the nearest Apple store to me is Charelston SC. 2hrs. Away. Been dealing with since Dec. 23

Good luck. I’ve changed my iPhone 12 from the first one and now on number 3. Really terrible speakerphone reception and sometimes outgoing voice clarity on others end. I’m now incline to believe this is so wide spread they’re not likely to call a recall. As much as these phones cost we shouldn’t be inconvenienced. I’m sure they are fully aware of the magnitude of these issues.

Good luck I’ve changed my phone Three times. As recently as Yesterday, Feb. 18th. Before I returned home while on speaker phone I called my sister. Long story short same problem. If I still had my IPhone 8 I’d return in a heart beat. Each phone same exact issue. I hear them fine. My voice breaking up terribly. I’ve spent so many hours on Apple, Verizon and texting support I’m tried. All this money. Any suggestions. I’m lost. I sure apple monitor this site and is aware of the issues. Going to contact them again. ☹️☹️☹️

Having the same issues with the mic, only on normal calls though. Calls via apps work fine.

i live in Malaysia where we don’t have an official apple store but authorized services centers. If I were to return my phone right now, they would take 2 weeks before they prepare a replacement (they’d need to do diagnostics and then send it to apple). At this juncture it’s hard for me to do replacements and so I’m just hoping apple will find some software updates.

I feel exactly the same and had the same experiences unfortunately. I also got my phone exchanged from a iPhone 12 Pro Max to another 12 pro max but it is exactly the same issue! I called in for probably the 20th time, explained the situation and they said “madam considering you have had a exchange this is not likely to be a phone issue but may be your software and advised me to restore”! Yet, still the same problem. I am sick and tired of calling and explaining them and now I don’t think they even believe me! I have already advised my friends, family and colleagues not to purchase the iPhone 12. Just disgraceful!

Same problem. Me, my husband, my daughter, and my son-in-law all bought the iPhone 12 on the same day in November 2020 (I think).....FINALLY, I've taken the time to google whether other people have had trouble not being able to hear on FaceTime. I have a grandchild so I FaceTime with them EVERY DAY, and we are at our wits' end not being able to talk to each other! The best we can do is turn our phones with the microphone facing up, and that helps, but it's ridiculous! We paid THOUSANDS of dollars for these phones, and three of us had perfectly fine iPhones before we did the trade-in.

After reading so many of these responses, I'm BLOWN AWAY that when I googled this, there were no NEWS articles about this. All of you have been calling and calling Apple and NOT ONE person has received a "fix" to the situation.

Are there actually iPhone 12s that don't crackle in and out? Is that why Apple is ignoring this?

I have the same problem with 11 pro max talking to my daughter on iPhone 11. I can hear her clearly. And now with my wife’s iPhone 12 Pro, same issue

but if I switch to older devices 6s or 8s, I don’t face any problem.

The problem is same with FT and WA and on both WiFi and cellular data.

@Apple, at least acknowledge, this is frustrating.

I have the same problem sent it off for a repair and they spent it bald apparently they changed the display to it to apple white they took it in for a hour cleaned the speaker and gave back saying there’s nothing g wrong with it and were very argumentative that there’s nothing wring it I’m stuck with the same issue which is extremely annoying how did you get them to exchange it I’m out off the 14 day period as well

We have this on 4 iPhone 12 minis bought at the same time this Christmas. One appears slightly less effected than the others, but still clips a bit. The others are terrible, making it almost i possible to have a proper conversation. It also happens on my own iPhone 12 pro max. It makes FaceTime pretty much useless as the sound just clips on and off.

This sort of issue should addressed as a P1 by Apple support. The current situation is getting silly.

I’ve had every iPhone iteration since the original iPhone, and never had this issue.
