microphone does not work on iphone 12 pro
I recently bought the iphone 12 pro. When I use facetime or facebook messenger video chat, the audio becomes choppy for the other end. Is it a hardware problem or software?
iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I have spent about 2.5hrs on the phone with apple today about this issue. In the past few days I have turned my phone off and on, tried FT with and without WIFI, removed my phone case to see if it was interfering with the mic, nothing has helped. I decided to try FT on my Ipad to see if how that went and it worked just fine. When I talked to apple today they had me restore my phone. The first time the restore froze and never actually restored it, I did it a second time then it finally restored setting. After the fresh restore I made a FT call and it was still choppy on the other persons end, I have no problems hearing them. Called apple again, I was going to restore a second time but I told this guy(as well as everyone else) about this thread and here is the convo.
Apple Tech: "No I'm not going to have you restore it again, if everyone is having this issue than I'm sure another restore isn't going to fix it. It will probably be fixed in the next IOS update."
Me: "I have told all the other apple techs about this thread and they said they haven't heard about any issues with this so how do you know this will be fixed in the next up date?"
He didn't really answer this question
Apple Tech: "They are wrapping up the newest update right now so if you can hang on for a little bit I'm sure it will be fixed."
Me: "How long is a little bit?"
Apple Tech: "A couple months."
.......................SO I'M SUPPOSED TO PAY $50ISH DOLLARS A MONTH FOR A PHONE THAT IS OVER A $1,000 FOR IT TO NOT WORK FOR A " COUPLE MONTHS"????
He then had me try one more thing, turn FT off restart my phone and then turn FT on again, I made a FT call and for about 10 min there was no choppyness butttt then it returned. I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do besides return it?!!
Has anyone tried video calling with and without your iPhone case? I’ve tried it today without the case and the mic seemed normal. I’ll try a different case and see. If anyone has tried it, please let us know.
Talking without a case made absolutely no difference for the choppy audio on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I was given 2 "like new" replacements and all three have the same mic/speaker defects. It is unfortunate that there is no recourse and Apple denies culpability.
Update 2: Still no issues with the microphone :). However, we now have the (known) issue with the (non-apple) wireless charger which stops charging the phone. Reboot as a work-around, but still it’s a really anoying bug.
Audio fixed!! Maybe?? After 7+ months and 3 replacement 12pros my audio seems consistent and good. Of all things I have tried including replacing the phones the issue may have been on the sim card.
The one item that has stood out in all that I have done is to have the carrier (I use AT&T) push an update to “VoLTE” on my phones sim card that controls the audio signal. Ask to have the VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology updated on your phone and see if that helps. It lives on the sim card and maybe the version of VoLTE or the way it is being added to card is not consistently working. I'll bet that those of us that have gotten new phone used the same sim card in each new phone???
“VOLT Refreash HD Voice is a suite of services enabled by VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology. VoLTE delivers voice calls over the 4G LTE network instead of the traditional voice network, providing clearer, more natural sounding audio when both parties are using HD Voice-enabled phones that are connected to our 4G LTE network.”
One 12pro tested at a Apple store with a bad battery/charging system even though the phone itself seemed ok.
It wont, its a hardware issue. The phone is trash. All these updates are pointless. My iPhone 10 was perfect, no issues. I could sit it down on the mic and still hear and talk perfectly. No choppiness ever.
the casing trick is silly. Its not a case issue lol. Everyone i know who has this phone has an issue with or without case.
I am in full agreement. I have tried EVERY "fix" that every Verizon tech and Apple rep has suggested. Supposedly the Apple engineers have been diligently working on a resolution for MY problem, but can't seem to figure out why I might be having issues....When I sent them the links to all of the complaints. Silence. I was told they "could not figure out MY problem and that to deal with it the best I could and wait for an update. wow....
Okay so I was the issue where my mic wouldn't work I was onbthe phone with apple for an hour they didnt help so I downloaded a diagnostic app and it told ne to turn off my 5g and go to Lte and instantly the problem wqs solved
My husband has the 12 and I have 12 pro max and they both have the same issue choppy when on speaker phone or FaceTime unless we use our airpod pros while on FaceTime. They really need to fix this issue ASAP
Thank you for sharing. I have a iPhone 12 Pro Max and have the same issues. Video recording work with voices, phone calls do not! Mic not working! WeChat call do not work either! Frustrating! Can’t make calls.
Just try not to cover the mic when you FaceTime, the hand or the mobile stand will block the mic and become choppy.
try rotate the phone in landscape and see if the mic working.
That is what I observed so far, and is working on AirPods.
I have the same problem when I speak with the speakers on. In both normal call and FaceTime call
Any suggestions on what’s the problem? Or how to fix it?
This is extremely annoying. +$1000 USD phone and the mic is not working. Purely an iPhone 12 Pro issue. Apple, please fix ASAP.
In my case , I tried without success
My phone is being replaced by Apple
I purchased mine through Apple so I am returning through Apple. This is a screenshot of a piece of the chat I had with Apple support, for your reference.
