iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

Also, some of us have iPhone 12 devices that for some reason don’t show the temperature warning, even though the device overheats to the point that it automatically starts shutting down features as a safety precaution measure… Mine is a 12 Pro and it does this, but never shows the warning.

It’s not a question of “oh, it feels a bit warm”. It’s the problem of one not being able to use the device due to it disabling features when it overheates. You can’t take photos with the device’s excellent cameras, because you can’t see the screen (as it dims down to about 30 % of the max brightness level) and thus you can’t see what you’re trying to photograph! Especially in daylight. Also, you can’t make video calls (Facetime etc.) or have meetings on Zoom or Teams, because you can’t see the person(s) you’re speaking woth, nor their shared screens. You can’t watch AppleTV or anything else on-demand or streamed, because you can’t see what’s on the screen. You can’t even make normal phone calls without earphones and a tabletop holder for the device, as it gets too hot to hold. You can’t properly see what’s posted on Instagram/FB etc., or create posts of your own, because you cannot see what’s displayed on the screen. Etc. etc.

I can’t believe it’s been more than six months since I started reading about also other people having these same issues with their new iPhone 12 / 12 Pro devices and nothing’s been done to address this issue. We’re all waiting for Apple to do something about this. Please. These problems with the iPhone 12 is a really bad thing for the Apple brand, and it would be wise to fix this asap.

Have I had my device examined by Apple? Yes I have. Twice. And after that, I’ve been promised by Apple a new device TWICE to replace this one (in the five months the process has been going on). Once the faulty device was picked up by a courier and a new device was supposed to be sent to me, but instead they returned the old one (for sure the same one, it has the same IMEI etc.). Then they apologised and promised to fix their paperwork (which apprently was at the wrong department), and told me they’ll again send a courier to get the old device and then they would send me a new one. I again had to nackup and reset the device to facory settings, and packed everything ready to go, for the courier to pick up the faulty sevice to be replaced.

Then nothing. I contacted them again to ask what’s going on and they had suddenly changed their mind and just kept say there’s nothing they can do about this. Nothing. Like a complete U-turn after months of troubleshooting and going through the issues and them admitting that they just can’t fix it and that of course I need a properly functioning device instead. But then the tone completely changed. I can’t get any explanation to why they are doing this. They haven’t even replied to my last email with the case number. Very strange.

Probably this message will be deleted too, because it’s “negative”. But of course it is. I’m not a happy customer. The issue is still unresolved.

No doubt it's hot here (Western Colorado) -- 100 degrees right now, .. But I was out about 5 minutes, holding the phone in my hand -- didn't lay it in the sun on the concrete or something stupid like that. Just took 5-6 pictures. As I said, Egypt will be hot. I'm dumping this phone as soon as I go back to Best Buy.

So, knowing the ambient temperature range rating for safe operation from Apple's Specification page for iPhone 12 is 32 - 95 degrees (F), you don't think operating the phone in temperatures 5 degrees above the maximum recommended range has anything to do with your experience?

Please test it and let us know. I may have to do the same.

Please know that in 100F temps any iPhone will give you the overheating error! Even my iPhone 6 and 8 did that for sure.

but it shouldn’t dim to unusable levels in 95-90 degree weather with just regular use. It may dim just a little which is my past experience with iPhone 6 and 8. But very usable.

My 12pro overheated and screen dimmed in normal outdoor conditions. Apple replaced the “display” but it continued to overheat and dim. They agreed to replace the device. In the first hour of possession of the new replacement, it overheated and dimmed with the “temperature” warning and shut down. I have ordered a 11pro and am waiting for it — traded the 2-hour old new “replacement” for a downgrade.. Hoping the 11pro performs better so I can take pictures again. The 10 never had this problem …

I live in Western Colorado and it gets hot out there. I hike outdoors a lot, and its often hot and sunny. I take LOTS of pictures. I used the iPhone 10 and was very pleased with it and never ever experienced a heating problem. When I sprung for the 12, for the upgraded camera, my problems began and I am now limited on taking pictures or using the map apps because the device overheats and blacks out. I recently bought a Sony camera so I can take pictures on a trip (leaving tomorrow). Also am waiting arrival (today hopefully) of an 11 Pro (downgraded the device but had to purchase again) so I can have a workable iPhone device.

My wife and I both have iphone12 pros. Within the last week, we have both have had issues with our phones over heating. Yesterday, I was using my phone in my car with a gps app (Waze) and I had a movie streaming service open (hbomax) at the same time. After finishing my drive, I picked up my phone off the cradle, my phone was so hot. Then I tried to access my unified email account and the emails were frozen. I could only see the top 3 emails but the rest were invisible. I tried to close down any open apps in the background, but that still didn’t help. Then I completely rebooted the phone and the heat dissipated and my emails loaded. Is there a fix coming through a software update?

i bought the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it is overheating in 20 C temperatures.

i have a new Apple charger. No apps running in the background.

the overheating killed the new cable and would not charge the new phone anymore. It does charge the old iPhone X.

I put in a new cable it charges the 12 Pro Max but it heats it up super fast. There is an issue with the 12 Pro Max.

the old and nee cable are working fine with the IPhone 10 X.

I have a mini 12 that gets very warm in normal day-to-day use. When I use Apple Maps as a GPS in my car I put it in a cradle over the dashboard. Twice now I have had overheating cause the screen to go blank. I didn't know what the heck had happened, except that the screen went blank. I was on my way to an appointment and relying on GPS, so having it apparently die put me in a bad spot. Fortunately the voice nav still kept giving instructions. This never happened with my 8Plus.

At a minimum it would be nice to have a voice annoncement letting me know the screen was going to be shutdown due to overheating.

I've actually been waiting to see what the next batch of iPhones are like and whether they will have the same problem. I suspect that they will.

I’ve been complaining about the dining/ overheating with my 11 Pro for a year now. Everybody told me make sure the Brightness is at max etc. I’ve done everything. If I’m playing a game outside it will dim, if I take photos it will dim,if I’m just sitting outside at dims. Some days it could be cloudy or 60 something degrees and it still dims. Two times recently I’ve had it shut down because it said it was too hot. Really what is the point of these phones if you cannot use it outside? I never liked Apple, kicking my butt for buying iphonr, still paying on the piece of crap. Once it’s paid off I’m going back to galaxy. I think Apple has gotten so big in their heads and don’t care about customers care about customers. Like today Fourth of July pool party with family I won’t be able to take pictures because I got them so badly I won’t be able to see anything. Very disappointing in the phone, the company, Amy of money that they charge for this piece of junk. I even bought a fan to attach to the back to keep cool it doesn’t work. Since they came out with the 12 and still having the same problems, Tells me they don’t listen to their customers and never attempted to fix the problem.I feel bad for anybody that waste their money.
