iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

I appreciate your making assumptions ( not a good idea in these times) about how long someone has or has not been involved with this thread. You should be careful there. . I’d be a lot more worried about my personal health than the above list if you are describing actual physical pain.

I personally have not been able to use many of the features you have described, if not all or more. due to Apple issues. I’m not going to list them . I ive been to Apple Engineering 7 times. I’m on iPhone 11 number 7 , ID number 9,, for completely different reasons. Since 12/14/19. So, you’re preaching to the choir here.

If I understand you correctly, your point is that many people are using iPhone 12s without having, or at least without reporting, overheating problems. What I don't see is your conclusion "so suck it up if your iPhone is overheating?" or "this problem is all in your imagination?" I'm sure you have a conclusion that isn't as dismissive-sounding as those, but it escapes me.

Many have listed what they tried including getting replacement phones to end up with the same problem. We are all aware there are millions of phones without this problem. Part of using this forum is to provide awareness to others.

There have been plenty of fixes issued by Apple over the years on all generations of devices to address a subset of devices. This type of public discussion, in addition to reporting problems to Apple, is also what leads them to make design improvements for future versions and also possibly issuing a recall and fixing devices for free that may not start exhibiting this problem until the warranty expires. I am still within the warranty period but have just a few months remaining and the problem just started a few weeks ago. Let’s just help each other.

Agree -- a fix should be available if a phone is not working. 10, or 10,000. Good point. Additionally, I'm sure some users don't hike, or take nature pictures in bright sunlight, or go to family reunions and not be able to capture outdoors pictures , or haven't put their phone in the front seat and tried to use Maps on the dark screen, or tried to read an email outside - so this has not been an issue for everyone. Also, some have not reported it. I told my Granddaughter this week about my phone darkening and going off after it dimmed. She said, "Oh yeah -- that happens to everyone in our family all the time (4 of them with 12's), but we never thought about reporting it." At this point, it would be helpful to know how and who to contact at Apple level (beyond calling Support, which hasn't resulted in resolution) and get them to address a possible solution. I'm all for ceasing the comparing of stories, and move on to a solution, but this will have to be done by Apple - we "like-users" can't resolve it by comparing stories.

It’s an obvious design flaw. Happens all the time to me… happing as I type this and I was only reading mail before this. One thing I can do that always reproduces the problem is to update multiple apps at the same time… has to be at least 20 apps to be sure it happens. Notified Apple but my guess is it is a hardware issue and they are going to remain silent as long as unreasonable number of phones don’t burst into flames.

Thank you! I totally agree. It is a design flaw which the ‘smart’ iOS/device architecture team overlooked which now the level 1 Apple Advisors need to compensate by telling a CS major that resetting the device is the only option. Resetting will NOT do anything to an operating system/ device flaw. Which is why I refuse to put my health at risk by going to a level one advisor in hopes of getting it fixed. The correct thing to do is acknowledge the flaw and look into a fix. The device gets so hot that it’s unbearable to hold the phone in my hands and I’m an adult. What if a child holds it?

We’ll put, and spit on with your reply to the last statement Two phones later and no acknowledgement from Apple that this is a defect problem is absolutely mind boggling. There needs to be a forum like this to get their attention not to mention warn people of this ongoing issue which looks like thousands of users are now recognizing.

I be done all the alternative attempts to correct this issue through tech support, apple’s in-store services, and finally resulting to two , count them two online replacement and still happening and insult to injury, I’m still getting the run around from Apple as well as haters on this thread that this is not a real issue! WTF!!!???

It will probably take melting phones catching on fire and injuring people to get the media’s attention and have Apple recall these phones!!!

I haven’t experienced any issues with overheating, but I have experienced my iPhone 12 Pro heating up near the motherboard while performing very normal tasks such as watching Netflix or YouTube, which causes the battery to drop by 6-8% almost instantaneously. I’ve only had my iPhone 12 Pro for about 2 weeks (this is my first time using an iPhone) and I didn’t realise how lacking the App Store was in proper, in-depth battery monitoring apps, so I haven’t been able to check for myself what’s going on. Does anyone know why this is happening and/or are there any solutions?

I'm so sorry you are experiencing what so many others are experiencing. After following this discussion group for months, it seems that Apple cannot provide a solution. Lots of money was spent on this latest and greatest phone... I downgraded to a 11 Pro - cost me $$, but at least I have a phone that works... Not sure I'll buy Apple again after their unresponsiveness.

Hello,

I try to allow my 12 Pro Max battery to run down to 20% before recharging.

However, when doing so I’ve noticed the back of the phone gets very warm AND the charger gets extremely hot. In fact too hot to touch.

I figured the heat is due to all the juice flowing to recharge the nearly dead battery. This lasts for about 1 hr then cools down.

Has anyone else noticed this?
