iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

My phone has been overheating for 3.5 days. It’s fever finally broke last night. LOL I did nothing different. I assume the issue will come back. Also noticed that it still hasn’t back up in 2 days, since my

last backup. Not sure what the holdup is. The other backups did fine, as I have reset it twice in the last 4 days. Also back camera doesn’t work, which is what started this whole mess I think. I started resetting my phone then the overheating got out of control. I hope they figure out this issue soon. Going to Apple this afternoon for my appointment and I’m kind of bummed that my phone no longer is overheating because I wanted them to feel how excessive it was.

Hi!!! I have the same issue with my phone, it just arrived yesterday (Tuesday) and I noticed that when I'm charging it, it suddenly gets so hot although I've only charged 2x. I bought the adapter from Apple because I don't have a USB-C compatible one and I think it's causing it (it charged so quick too, 20% to a 100% in 20-30 mins) I unplugged my phone and switched to my old charger and my phone is back to normal temperature. I hope this works for you guys as well!!! :))

I've had my iphone for exactly one year. It's a 12. a month ago it started popping that it was in Overheating mode. So the nice little warning, the warning that you can only make emergency calls, the whole gambit.

I called Apple support and while I was talking to them I actually had to put the phone in my freezer while on hold to keep it from going into the overheating mode. There was surely an update that they did that caused the issue. Updated the phone again with the latest update and while I have not had an overheating issue since, the battery life (after only a year) is at 75%.

To all people claiming it's normal that the iphone 12 gets uncomfortable hot i have to say this. I own mobiles since forever. I owned Samsung's, Huawei's, Sony's, Nokia's, iphones and many other brands. But non of this mobiles get scorching hot while charging or surfing the net. May they get warm? Sure after longer gaming sessions or equal demanding tasks the mobiles could get warm. But never so hot that a warning was kicked out. The iphone 12 seems to get so hot it's uncomfortable to hold, that's uncool on many levels. The battery health will diminish over time with such high temperatures, surely the electronics inside the phone will also suffer over a longer period of time. So if you pay 1000 dollars + for a mobile one expects more! Each time your iphone 12 heats up tremendously, the lifespan of your battery decrease s rapidly. I saw this with my iphone X and iphone 11 pro max. Both of them lost battery health % after charging sessions who we're extremely hot. I stopped using the fast charger from apple, because each time i used it, i could basically watch the % of the health app drop rapidly. My iphone 11 pro max is one year old and it already lost 13% (87%) of it's capacity. My Sons iphone 11 pro max who never used fast charging is still at 96%. Hence i know for a fact that heat will kill your battery.

Same problems. Did diagnostic over the phone with apple, to have them tell me nothing is wrong. Made an appointment in the store to have them tell me nothing is wrong. 3 hour battery life with 5g off. If nothing is wrong, then it is terrible by design. Sent it back, i’m on my 4 year old 7pro again. I’ll keep using it until i try samsung. I’m doubtful about apple anymore, i feel like a sucker more and more with their products, and don’t care to participate in the diminutive behavior of their “geniuses”.

Please - all computers are designed for an average set of tasks.

Apps that use a high amount of CPU power will cause heating, it's how computers work.

An app that is using much more than it should will generate a lot of heat and use a lot of battery; GPS apps are especially bad about this if not designed correctly. Facebook's app also does this as heaven forbid it not tag your location correctly. 🙄

There's nothing wrong here but your expectations; you would have the exact same issues with any Android phone.

If you manage to find one that works better for you, return your iPhone if within 14 days of purchase for a refund, or sell it, and buy the other phone.

Life is too short to be frustrated.

Your explanation would be correct except it doesn’t happen on the 8, 10 and 11 same usage same apps.

Using my camera for exactly 1 minute and the middle upper side of the phone is really hot.

yesterday had a video chat, couldn’t touch the phone, maybe it’s the same heat generating inside but the new design more “metallic” passing the heat outside higher?

And why would so many people comment here on a product they clearly wanted and were loyal to in the last 10 years?

I personally returning it, for many other reasons, it’s jus to not worth the hype anymore, really not.

Yes, it was in a backpack in the sun.

I've had the same thing happen when I have left my phone on a window sill or in my glove compartment on a warm day.

In particular, the phone will need to cool if the case temperature gets above 95°F/35°C:

Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)

I’m experiencing the same issue on my 12pro. I do have the clear Apple branded case on the phone. Does not get hot while charging. But when surfing the net, or flipping thru Facebook it gets pretty warm. None of that is on 5G either. Also battery drain is FAST. Woke up at 6:45 with 100% charge. Been reading the news, it is now down to 84% in only 34 minutes.

Suspect Photos / temporary restore issue.

Just come from 11Pro (through all the OS betas) with no issue.

New 12Pro is getting very hot under moderate use (Twitter etc)

Apparent from battery drain that the Photos re-analysis is running. Suggest check that and wait for that to finish*

*mine takes a few days on a new phone (65k photos?). IIRC the facial/object recognition etc is done on device and kept on device for privacy. Thus, when you upgrade/reinstall the restored backup doesn’t contain the search index for your photos and your new phone spends a few days caning the Core/GPU to analyse all your photos.

I assume that’s maintaining a baseline load that leads to hot running when you do more on top.

Just got my iPhone 12 pro last wk. & started using it for the last 5 days....Just noticed it overheating today after using it continuously for 50 mins.Had to turn the power off to play safe.Don’t think this is normal & was thinking of returning it & have it replaced or just return it period.I know this problem occurred on my previous old iPhones but why is it happening to this new & expensive phone.

Nov 10, 2020 10:00 PM in response to bao194

Many "Geniuses" don't really understand the technical details, ime @bao194.

How old is the phone, have you restored a backup, how big is your photo library & other parts of your backups? Have you checked what "background" battery consumption you've had in the past 24h.

Advice: give it a few days...

It'll do it's background business and calm down.

Most of the work is recalculating it's AI-comprehension of your photos which doesn't backup to the cloud to protect your privacy (IIRC). Mine's now a few days old and running amazingly & cool.
