2 copies of Macintosh HD - data

I upgraded to Catalina today, and discovered that Time Machine was not working. An error message indicated that there were two copies of the Macintosh HD - data volume, and stating that one of them should be renamed. Checked it out in disk utility and sure enough there were two copies. I tried renaming one of them as instructed but so far TM is stuck in "Preparing backup" and nothing happening. Any help would be much appreciated.

Figure out which is the correct one, and remove the other.

First make sure there is nothing on the other that you want.

In Disk Utility, select each and click the Info button.

The valid one will be mounted at /System/Volumes/Data.

The other will be mounted at /Volumes.
