iMac Not Liking 4 Port USB Hub

So I've been using an Amazon 4 port hub for over a year with not problems. Recently my iMac has been restarting only to get stuck on the grey screen. I did some research and found out that if I unplug it, it should restart normally, I did, and it started up fine. So is there a specific hub that I should use? Should I not use one? My iMac is a late 2012 model, running of an external SSD hard drive, because my internal drive is shot. Thanks.

hmm... you could also have a bad device or cable plugged into that hub.

I would try removing one device at a time from the hub to see if any of those are causing the problem. If not, then I would suspect that the hub or it's cable is the problem.

What all do you have connected to that hub?

If it is a bus powered hub (one without it's own power supply), then it could be overloading the iMac's USB bus at startup.

If you have several non-powered drives or other devices on the hub, then you really need to replace it with a self-powered hub. for example only > https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XTKV8V/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?

Also make sure that your external startup SSD, is plugged directly into the iMac and not thru a hub.
