iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

Excellent findings, and you are correct. The iPhone 11 series has much better battery life when compared to the updated 12 series. Hence why I'm on the fence to return my 12 pro and get 11 pro max / 11 pro because I care about endurance.

I tested the device without the SIM again and noticed it dropped 4% over 11 hours on idle. Which is not too bad. On an 11 series this probably would of dropped 1% on standby. But, for what it is, the standby drain, in my case, is much better without the SIM card inserted in the 12 pro. Although the battery life is not as great as the iPhone 11 pro, your device should not be draining 15-30% while there is NO ACTIVITY :| and apple needs to send out an update asap to fix this.

Actually this is a software problem that occurs all of a sudden, and in my case I could solve it by restoring iOS via recovery mode ( iPhone connected to my Mac with a cable, similar to forced restart but you keep pushing the button on the right as long as the Apple logo disappears and the logo for the recovery mode appears).

As you can see on the screen shots, one day to another the battery drained much faster even though the phone was used much less.

I haven't done a hard reset, nor reboot as it is more what you meant no?, until now. But I am not the user who is facing the worst drain also.

I have of course already done several normal reboots and I never seen any noticeable difference.

Here is what I get yesterday, the phone was at 100% on Sunday at 6:31pm and hit 0% on Tuesday at 9pm approximately.

Not so bad would you say, but loosing 50% in 24h with only 2h05 of screen time seems really huge to me.

iOS 14.3, O2 UK as a main line with eSim line disabled.

I’m using 3G and it doesn’t even help, forced restart doesn’t help either, Siri is off, background refresh is off, screen wake is off, basically anything possible is off.

Only airplane mode helps. This is terrible. The only option left is to try the version which is not allowed to be mentioned here but not sure it’s worth it because some reported that it does help. Not sure what to do.

Can’t return the device anymore. But the device is not fit for purpose, this should allow the return in UK?

Hi guys, I also noticed this problem since I started using my iPhone 12 Pro (on day one). With my previous XS it never happened. I'm attaching my screenshots as well:

And here is the battery health:

I have dual SIM setup with 5G off (since it can't be turned on with dual SIM), and only one data plan with auto switch off. Still, as many users reported, even turning data and wifi off for testing purpose wouldn't solve the issue: the battery would still drain as before.

It looks like the drain is independent to the utilization that could hopefully be solved via software update, but I found this behaviour only on 12 PRO despite having other models like X and XS on the same OS version that work fine.

It would be nice to have some words from Apple itself on this phenomenon.

Dropping this here to whoever it might be applicable / helpful.

Those who do not have 3G option OR use Physical SIM as Primary for 4G Data can easily skip.

Device: iPhone 12 128GB

Location: India

Physical SIM provider: Airtel

Voice & Data: 3G

eSIM Provider: Airtel

Voice & Data: 4G

On the aforementioned settings for more than a week now with consistent results.

Also note that I am on WiFi most the time (95% plus), with WiFi calling enabled. WiFi, Bluetooth and Mobile Data all was turned off during the night (~7 Hours) i.e. non-active hours in the chart.

Below is the battery usage report for Dec 29/30.

i had an iPhone 12 mini (UK-o2) had the drain so returned and purchased an iPhone se 2020 2nd gen, I have been using it for over a week all good and last night draining started same uk-o2. So it’s not just draining on the 12’s.

all background activity off, mail on manual fetch. Bluetooth and cellular off only think on was WiFi.

So upset that it’s started again, i don’t charge it over night so very frustrating when I need to charge it again before I leave for work in the morning. On 14.3 and 100% battery health brand new device.

Connection doesn’t seem to be an issue for me but the battery still drains in idle. I’ve tried everything, like different types of restoring, 3G, force restarts, turned off Siri and background refresh. No luck...

I also tried the point four update. Still the same.

Constant battery drain without a change

Jan 6, 2021 2:41 AM in response to Master26A

My iPhone 12 Pro worked fine, with a logical and expected battery usage, for the first two months. Then suddenly about a week ago, without me changing anything on the phone or in my usage patterns, I started losing 50% - 60% of the battery charge overnight with no activity whatsoever (see graph from last night attached). I have executed my own investigation over all the usual suspects (background processes, notifications, mobile data, resetting the phone, etc. ) but nothing helped. I have contacted Apple Support, they ran the diagnostics on the phone with the conclusion that there is nothing wrong. I intend to give it another week or so to see if there comes a software solution but then I intend to demand a replacement.

I upgraded from the XS Max to the 12 Pro a few days ago. I immediately noticed this issue as I don’t usually leave my phone on charge overnight. I lost over 20% during my 6 hours of sleep while my phone was idle, with 5g off !

This is an alarming amount of battery drain and I’m kind of regretting my decision to buy this, I’m worried this is a phone defect and can’t be fixed with a software update. Does anyone know if Apple commented on this issue?

Tonight I will be doing a battery test with my XS Max and 12 pro. Both will be 100% charged, and both will be set to Airplane mode. I’m almost certain of the result but just want to be sure.

I attached a picture showing the 12 pro losing just over 20% between 3am - 9am last night, with no activity.
