iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

After a couple days of experimenting.

Let me give you scenarios/examples with no regard to any other settings other than those mentioned being turned on or off.

iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.3

SIM card installed, WiFi on, Cellular On, Bluetooth in Standby (Turned off in CC to disable new connections, but still enabled)

Battery drops between 15 and 30% over an eight hour time frame while not being in use. (This was the case for a couple days, until I realized something was clearly wrong)

SIM card installed, WiFi off, Cellular off, Bluetooth standby same as before

Battery drops around 10% over the same time frame (Better, but still not satisfying)

Now get this!

SIM card taken out, Wifi on, Cellular off, Bluetooth same as before, I also turned Airplane Mode on for the sake of it

Draining between 1 and 3% , over the span of 8 hours.

I know, it seems absolutely silly to use an iPhone without a SIM card, but as long as this bug is not fixed taking out the Sim card might be your best option to prevent your battery from draining over night. Or you just simply keep it on a charger. Keeping the SIM and at least turning off WiFi and cellular or putting the device into airplane mode should make the battery drain a little less too.

Some other things you might want to switch off, if only to test for a couple days to see if battery life improves and slows the drain. Keep in mind, you can disable everything temporarily and don't have to worry about anything breaking. If something needs a certain thing enabled, iOS will most likely give you a prompt anyways. You can go back and enable everything again, but until a version of iOS 14.3.x or 14.4 is released that addresses the those kind of issues, it's the best and to be frank, the only thing you can do.

  • Location Services > System Services. Be bold and turn off EVERYTHING. Toggle the status bar icon (the switch on the very bottom) so when you slowly enable them one by one again, you can keep an eye on what triggers the location to update. With the status bar icon on, you can check and investigate closely how and when a certain service is updating. I found the Find my iPhone location feature updates like crazy.

System customization also updates in the background constantly ( if you turn it off, Dark Mode/ Appearance will still be able to work in sunset/sunrise mode, night mode however will work only when you put it on a custom schedule, and optimized battery charging will not work (even the option itself in the battery menu is enabled) if you have Significant Location and/or System Customization disabled).

  • Put Bluetooth into standby so it stops searching for new devices (Toggle it via Control Center so the icon becomes white.)

  • Turn off 'Ask to Join Networks' and set 'Auto-join Hotspot' to Never in Wi-Fi settings to stop the device from constantly checking for sources, notifying you and trying to connect to other routers.

I don't mention any of those things like turning off Background App refresh, dimming your display etc as those can be found in literary every 'iPhone battery savings' video or article.

It is clear that the issue can be pinpointed to the cellular modem, which can only be put into completely pause if there is no SIM card in the device. Airplane mode alone does not seem to fix the issue fully nor does turning off Cellular data help much if anything.

I’m also suffering from battery drain at night. I don’t plug in the charger over night and I’m loosing around 20% with no screen on time and all background updates disabled.

This last night my iPhone 12 lost 20% and during the exact same timespan my two year old Android only lost 2%. My wife’s iPhone SE (First Gen) also lost just 2% and she has background updates enabled plus a bunch of social media apps like Instagram and Facebook which I don’t have.

Obviously there is something wrong, this drain is not acceptable. Nor is the suggested “fixes” like plugging in over night. I mean if it’s draining 20% during 6-8 hours, that’s around 60% a day compared to the normal which should be around 6% drain. This will definitely shorten the battery lifespan over time since you’ll waste more cycles because of this.

I updated to 14.2 but that did not make a difference. Not using dual-sim, just the e-sim. And 5G is disabled.

It’s similar for me. After charging to any percentage it seems to last abnormally long without any battery percentage decrease. After dropping the first % it seems to drop as normal according to use.

iPhone 12 only using single e-sim. Physical slot is empty.

I am also experiencing the same trouble on my new iPhone 12. It's draining on idle,i am always connected to Wi-Fi network in my home,i will not turn off my Wi-Fi on my iPhone 12, I kept it idle on night at 84% but on morning it was 78%....i think it was draining because of Wi-Fi....

Yesterday I did a full reset of my iPhone 12 (recovery mode restore with iTunes). With all settings at default it drained 17% over about 7 hours during the night (without any screen on time). This however might be attributable to the fact that is was a fresh install and it might have done indexing and what not.

Today during the day it’s only drained about 4% in 8 hours, so we’ll se what the drain is tonight. Seems odd if it drains more at night time than during the day. Hoping the reset will have solved the issue.

Nov 8, 2020 11:13 PM in response to Master26A

So tonight mine again increased the drain from 17% last night to 27% this night. There is no indication in the battery app on what’s causing the drainage.

Yesterday I left mine unused for about 8 hours during the day and it only lost 4%. In the battery app you can clearly see battery usage increase after midnight, without any usage what so ever.

Nov 14, 2020 12:23 AM in response to Master26A

I’ve been keeping logs over the nightly drain. This is my results during the last 7 days. This is the drain at night during about 7 hours of no screen on time, and iPhone laying face down on my nightstand.

43% -> 26% = -17%

64% -> 37% = -27%

72% -> 68% = -4%

76% -> 71% = -5%

76% -> 73% = -3%

69% -> 64% = -5%

46% -> 33% = -13%

I’ve had a few days with almost normal drain, but then this morning it had lost 13%.

The battery app always reports no usage during the night even if the drain is high. Using a single e-sim. Last night it was in low power mode while all other nights has been in normal mode.

Now while 13% lost last night is not extreme, it’s still a sign that something is wrong. Especially since it was in LPM and there are no apps reported to have been used either on screen or in the background. It’s likely some internal OS process going haywire and wasting CPU cycles and hence not visible in the battery app.

I’m thinking (and hoping) this is a software issue which is fixable with an update. If this were a hardware issue I would expect the nightly drain to not differ so much between nights.

Sadly, coming from cheap Android phones I expected better from an iPhone than this. Really hoping for a fix soon.

Nov 16, 2020 11:20 PM in response to Master26A

For the last 10 days mine has lost an average of 10% during the night (about 7 hours). Biggest drop was 27% and smallest was 3%. Still thinking this must be a software issue. All nights the battery app has reported no screen time and no background activity. My guess is that there is some issue with the modem firmware or drivers.

I'm wondering if this issue is somehow connected to the overheating that some seem to be experiencing (There is a different thread about this). And that we’re just lucky to have a smaller excessive load that just manifests as a 2-3% drain per hour instead of overheating...

Nov 19, 2020 3:15 AM in response to Grenouille99

Charging at night might alleviate the nightly drain, but won’t help the idle drain happening during the day. Losing 2% or more every hour on idle during the day and off charger significantly shortens battery life.

Nov 19, 2020 5:45 AM in response to Master26A

So my last post got removed, but anyway, I think I’ve tried everything possible to solve this issue. No matter what I do I see a drain of between 10-20% every night, with average around 12% with only three nights under 10%.

Im guessing and hoping this is an IOS 14 issue, seems to be lots of people suffering from drain since IOS 14, so it might not be specific to iPhone 12. I’ll wait until 14.3 is released and if that doesn’t fix it I’ll have to send it in for repair. Not a fun thing to have to do with a brand new device...

Nov 19, 2020 10:51 AM in response to Community User

Ok, so after installing 14.2.1 I notice that the modem firmware is bumped to version 1.14.06, it was 1.14.05 in iOS 14.2. I’ll make sure to log the drain tonight and we’ll see if it makes a difference!

I did use the iPhone during the last 7 hours regularly. For me 10% are good. And like I said, the battery last for two days now. Of course while I use the phone normal. This is just a little less then I had with my iPhone 11 Pro.

Feb 15, 2021 12:26 AM in response to IJ77

Uhm how exactly is that ‘missing the point completely‘?

Customizing YOUR phone that makes it YOURS? And makes it work for you?

Doing something that gets rid of the battery drain (yes you are right, I should not have to do that in the first place). But it sure as sh*t is better than doing nothing about it and complaining. When there is obviously a way to work around the issue. It’s not like my phone can do any less than before and has all its features disabled.

As long as there is 'flat parts' in the drain curve, there is nothing wrong and indicates that the device does not unexplainably lose percentages just by idling. Any other steep drops are normal and depending on what one is doing on their device but a constant decline (like the origin problem of why this thread and many others even exist) that is a problem indeed. But you seem to be in luck. PS: There is nothing wrong with charging your device more often and not letting it drain away! The battery likes that more (in the long run).

Same here

I have an iPhone 12 pro max and it’s completely insane how much battery life i lose for a short amount of time. Just by browsing for one hour i lose 8-10%. God forbid using social networks. Only by texting on WhatsApp i still lose about 10% for an hour. No commenting if i go on YouTube… Like what’s the point in disabling basic stuff? I disabled background activity, notifications, brightness is low, internet connection 80% of the time is off and i still lose so much battery life throughout the day.

Apple should think more about this before starting to sell everything for 1299$…
