iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

So I had the opportunity to test two iPhone 12 Pro Max for 24 hours. My brother was kind enough to lend his graphite Max.

Both phones have same set up. Same postpaid lines under the same carrier. Mine is connected to my Apple Watch. Wifi turned off in both. Here’s the result.

Pacific Blue

7pm - 61%

5:30am - 56%

8:30am - 53%

11:30am - 51%

2:30pm - 47%

7pm - 39%

Total battery percentage lost - 22%

Graphite

7pm - 52%

5:30am - 48%

8:30am - 45%

11:30am - 44%

2:30pm - 39%

7pm - 32%

Total battery percentage lost - 20%

I think a 20% battery drain after 24 hours on standby is not acceptable compared to the 6-10% battery drain of my 11 Pro Max on standby for 24 hours.

Guys, one more observation from my side. You should also notice, who had this battery drain issue, that under the cameras the surface is a bit warmer.

I had conversation with Apple support, in Hungary, and they mentioned that the cellular modem can be found there.

I believe that as Apple came back for Qualcomm's modem from Intel, there could be a firmware problem with this new modem and this is the reason why it consumes a lot of battery.

Just guessing, because still no prove of that.

I can improve the situation a lot by changing the "network selection" from "auto" to my actual provider (I can select between three) to an extent where I am no longer sure if there is even an issue afterwards (there is still some battery drain but that could just be normal) but the battery consumption is even better when I disable the mobile connection altogether and just use Wi-Fi (including Wi-Fi calling). Then idle battery consumption is really good.

So, my conclusion is: It is definitely related to the mobile connection (irrespective of data usage). It also seems to have to do with the network provider(s) somehow. Either the phone juggles between different network providers all the time causing the battery drain or some specific providers are triggering this issue.

I'm pretty hopeful that this gets fixed with a simple software update.

I’m astonished to hear that Apple support staff actually suggested you to quit all apps and turning off wifi before you put your iPhone 12 mini on idle overnight.

I don’t think I even need to do that with an iPhone 4.

The iPhone 12s are NOT cheap, I’d feel pathetic to use such an expensive device bought by good money, and having to turn off wifi, use 2G, run barely no Apps, as if I’m using a piece of 10 year old junk.

I was hesitant to make time and contact apple support but today I did through chat.

I intentionally contacted them and pointed this apple discussion as we as informed them about all the media reports of this issue, so we make more data of reporting the issue directly to them. They refuse to answer questions and give opinions when I kept bringing how many people complain about this online. Next they ran diagnostics on my device and said everything is ok with exclamation mark so happy lol, then advised me to bring my phone to store for inspection by engineers when I kept moaning about the broader issue. I already told them people from here had several replacements and still have the battery drain issue so this isn't going to help either. It's a matter of luck and throwing the dice to get a good device replacement and then one god knows how many days it's going to be OK until the issue appears again.

I tried to push this and get seniors or higher management escalation with the only intention to again point this topic and all the media attention around this. I know well that regardless of the time spent with the support my phone isn't going to be magically fixed of this issue. I'm just doing it for the good of all of us so this gets more attention.

I managed to get a senior agent escalation. They ran diagnostics again but this time the agent said it's for the hardware, and asked me to send them screenshot of my battery usage for past 24 hours and past 10 days. They said the device passed the test for all sensors and that for the battery health check and in this case it means that it's a software issue, which they will escalate above for further investigation. They saw from the hardware diagnostic test that my battery for the past 24 hours on 10th December dropped significantly when the device was not in use and doesn't show an app in use during that time as well. This is shocking!

The senior agent just closed my case at the end and just advised me to call the support by phone with my case number so continue troubleshooting lol. I'll dial them later today to see what's gonna happen and I'll update.

As comments are being deleted and thread was Re-Titled by Moderator, I guess there is someone watching this thread and doing this maintenance. It would be realy lovely to get some guidence (maby by this person), what else can we do to get some kind of official statement by Apple about this.

I would say this thread have enough activity to get some attention.

I had 12 mini replaced, just to see same battery drain on second device (warm welcome after coming from android device). 14 day period for returning the product is coming to an end and I dont know what to do. Should we keep sending phones back? When diagnostics say, that there is everyhing perfectly fine with our battery drain, I dont want to miss this period, when I can return it without any reason. If it is going to be fixed soon I guess, we can live with that. Or should we just buy a diferent phone?

People are desperate here.

I think they simply aren't allowed to acknowledge the issue unless Apple already has a solution ready and explicitly allows service personell to disclose information about it to customers. They just want to be as legally safe as possible. I bet they are already working on a solution.

I'm pretty sure returning phones doesn't help anyone. If it's a hardware fault then all phones are affected, including current replacements. If it's a software bug then there will be a patch. I'm keeping my phone on Wi-Fi until then and hope that they will release a patch soon. Everything else is just a pointless hassle unless you actually want a complete refund.
