iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

I spoke on Saturday to support and I was told apple is hard working to fix this problem. It should be fixed in the next release. I asked in 14.3? and she told me, yes it is supposed to be fixed in 14.3... So here it is: 14.3

Anyone on 14.3 has any positive feedback? If not, we all should contact support again. I have gotten an extension til end of January to return my phone, which I really consider, if the problem still exist January. I download the update right now and gonna test it this night.

Hi NittyMDev,

I switched to 3G after reading your post and it helped.

At 11:30 last night the battery was at 61%, then I changed voice & data to 3G. I usually enable low power mode and switch off WiFi before going to bed, I did that also.

In the morning at 8, I found the battery at 55% which is just a 6% drop, otherwise it would have dropped 16%.

So it clearly shows the battery drain is happening due to the network connectivity.

Nobody would like to use 3G on a phone that is 5G capable. Waiting when Apple is going to fix this !

But at least I’m happy, they provided this forum so that we can help each other.

I went today morning to Apple shop. They were very kind and they told me. YOUR BATTERY IS GOOD. I told them it’s not. I charge it all night and In morning I came and I lost 16% in stand by mood. For 45 minutes. They said (WE DO Not KNOW. LEAVE YOUR PHONE FOR 14 DAYS AND WE Will CHECK AGAIN) wtf ..........

I am still in Apple shop and I am really angry. And disappointed. This is Apple problem not mine. Not ours. They should fix it. Or pay for it. At least change this phones with new ones. By the way I have Apple care and it’s nothing.

Update:

I had to charge my phone as it was 35% to install iOS 14.3. While it was installing, phone went to 84% so I unplugged. Went to bed few hours later with 83%, used it a bit and went to 80%. Turned off WiFi during sleep and woke up with 77%. I HOPE this isn't one of those unknown rare 1 out of 30 occasions where this happens. I will look it closely and report by end of the week.

over the course of 6 hours I lost 13% overnight, iOS 14.3, connected to WiFi, no background tasks. This is the most ridiculous drain I’ve ever experienced on a new phone. No way can this phone live up to the usage time Apple claims. It appears there is no fix and must be a fault with the new modem. It would be lovely for Apple to actually address this issue.

Replacement 1 iPhone 12 Pro Max

Night 5 Restored from backup, so on iOS 14.2.1 now. Still manually selected O2 and 3G in mobile settings, mobile data turned off. Also set low power mode. Connected to home wifi.

Apps exited, background refresh off.

14-12-20 22:10 battery 89% left on

15-12-20 09:10 battery 86% left on.

That’s better. Will try putting it on 4G tonight and see what happens. Not expecting much from 14.3, that level of update is aimed more at releasing new features. 14.3.1 might have a proper fix. The hardware seems ok, it’s the software that needs fixing. Even if there is a modem problem, they should be able to code around it. Will try Wednesday though.

I am running out of patience.

Now we have to do everything to get more public attention for the issue and put pressure on Apple to act.

We have to report to the press and online portals so that more articles appear about it.

The consumer protection agency can be informed that a defective device is on the market and the manufacturer stubbornly refuses to admit the problem.

If something does not happen within a very short time, and by that I mean a month at the most, I will return the device and buy a mobile phone from another manufacturer.

Please all join in !

Annoy Apple with the problem: by e-mail, on the hotline and, if possible, in the Apple Stores.

Don't be fobbed off with the statement that it's normal.

Spread the word about the problem on all possible channels!

I agree with you 100% on this.

I have been using Twitter and tagging everyone relevant, Apple Support, Tech Reviewers and every channel that i can think of, so it can help spread the word about this.

But i think everybody should use Apple support channels as must you can.

Here in Portugal i don’t have an Apple Store, so i can’t do a presence complaint, but to those who can DO IT .

This as to be reported non stop.
