iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

Hi ColinFromSusse,

Very interesting theory, the possibility that the transfer of the data/setup from iPhone 6 to new phone could be causing the battery issues. This is a new consideration in figuring out this issue.

I did exactly as they advised you to do by doing a complete iPhone data erase via selecting Settings->General->Reset

“All contents and settings”

and no restore of “Apps or Data”. I then used the AppStore to download one app, then another, etc... it’s tedious but it will isolate the issue to either hardware or software. Good luck!

Had an interesting talk with Apple support tonight.
Support agent suggested that my battery issue might be due to phone copying all setup from iPhone 6 which is quite old. Has suggested that I backup phone ( PC or iCloud) then do a full factory reset, and NOT restore phone, and see if battery problem goes away. Then reload apps slowly and see if any one of them causes the issue.
Have not tried this yet, but sounds plausible.
interesting to know if others with issues transferred phone setups from a previous phone ( and which model) or if setup phone just as new.

Sorry, no - lots of people (myself included) already thought of that 50 or so pages back in this thread! I originally set my 12 mini up from a backup of my old iPhone SE; when I saw the drain problem my first thought was that it might be due to something in the old config, so did a factory reset and set up from new. No difference at all - drain still there even with a clean phone with no third party apps at all.

By now, Apple must know they have a modem problem, so I have no idea why their support are suggesting things like this which were proved not to work by users on here a month ago...

I can only guess what do you mean by «the option from that is not allowed to mention» here.

If you have a PC or iMac with iTunes installed, connected with cable and reinitialize (the official 😉) iOS (Perform force restart/hard reset, but keep pushing the button on the right until you have the symbol with the cable-connected iPhone) .

That solved it for me.

I returned my 12 pro because of horrible battery life. I read this forum everyday to see if it's going to be fixed before I ordered a new 12 series. Other forums said the operating s ystem fourte en dot f ou r is supposed to fix it. Also, older devices are being affected as well. I too was disgusted by the amount of cash I put out on this device for such mediocre battery life. Best thing I can advise you to do is sit tight and keep updated with the forums. Apple support will just tell you SwItCh OfF BaCkGrOuND ApPs and FaCtOrY ReStOrE :)

I don’t really see any devices but the 12 series being affected. People that still have their 11 pro Max’s on here say theirs still function normally while their 12’s drain. I can’t return this thing anymore so I only have a small window to sell it and get back an 11 pro max or be stuck w a **** phone. If it’s a modem problem there is no way they are going to do a recall or replace all the affected units.

Well I tried what apple support suggested -and some on here have said has already been tried.

Backed up phone. Gave it a full reset. Did not restore, but just re-entered my Apple ID and reloaded a few apps.

charged to 100% at 23:00 last night

left with WiFi, mobile data and Bluetooth all OFF.

08:30 this morning battery 87%.

So not as bad as it was but still not good.

apple said they would get me an advance replacement where they send new phone to me before I send old one back, but then said no. Next support person trying again.

I can’t go back to store I collected it from as store is closed due to Covid restrictions!

IF the next version of IOS after 14.3 does have a fix, why won’t apple tell us ??

Hi,

I bought a iPhone 12 Mini 128GB on 12th Dec and noticed the battery is draining 25% or more at times when left idle over night. I tried few work arounds like disabling WiFi, keeping Low Power Mode to 'ON' always, Mobile Data and Background App Refresh but still the battery was draining constantly at 25% or 30% at times.

Took it to service centre by end of 1st week and they restored the iOS to 14.3 and asked me to monitor the battery performance. It remained the same even after upgrading to 14.3 version and i took it to service centre again at the end of 2nd week. They took the device for further investigation and said it might take 5 to 7 working days.

After a week when i got back the device they said the device was working fine under lab observation and no parts were replaced. In the meantime when I was talking to the Customer Care asking on the update, 1 of the representative said they replaced the battery since it had issues. I was hoping that the problem got resolved but at the time of delivery the Service centre representative said it was a miscommunication about battery replacement.

This time after getting the device, I got it with same iOS 14.3 version and with Background App Refresh turned OFF. I tried doing the routine test and found that the battery drained 25% when i kept the Mobile Data Option in 4G. The next day i tried to run it with 3G while leaving it idle overnight and found the battery drained only 5%.

I'm not sure how much the signal reception for 4G in Chennai, India and I have a Vodafone Corporate number. This is really sick to see the battery draining with 4G and I have to constantly keep a tab on my battery % leftover.

This being my 1st iPhone device since I was using Android devices over the last 8+ years i'm fairly unsatisfied with the experience and regretting my decision to go with this high end device.

Hey, I feel your pain as I put out alot of cash on this device ( more than I ever spent on any device). The best thing to do is return the iphone and use your old android then monitor this forum. Once the issue is resolved ( hopefully with Ios 14.four), repurchase the iphone 12 mini. (Removing the sim card from the device solves the issue... but it's an iphone not an ipod xD)
