iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

If moderators delete all comments related to the battery with the next update, is such a disrespect to everyone’s hopes and time following this because there are almost no comments from people that are on the new one. Aren’t we allowed full transparency to know what exactly is going on??????

You mention transparency and Apple in one sentense. You are kidding right? You can can count down to your and mine message about that being deleted, just wait. Ignoring way to long complaints is a strategy.

After the lack of adequate support from Apple, I tried using a second carrier in my country (had a backup sim). Just like the O2/EE case people have described here, I did not see the battery drain on the second carrier (Jio). Surprisingly while I use this carrier, I dont see the option Voice & Data under the Cellular (Mobile) Data Options whereas this was where I could switch between 4G and 3G in my previous carrier. The new carrier also shows up as LTE in place of 4G (previous carrier) on the top next to the signal bar. The problem seems to be lurking somewhere in here.

I am now considering to switch to the second carrier after a few weeks of testing using the backup sim. Unfortunate for my previous carrier to lose out on me due to Apple's bug.

Different carriers indeed do offer different options when it comes to 3G/4G(LTE)/5G. The difference in your available options reflect that. I have a dual SIM situation and depending on the carrier (Data Plan) option I select, I have different Voice & Data options. In a nutshell, it's carrier dependent and is not directly connected to the battery drain issue. What might be happening though, is that the phone communicates with different carriers in different ways and the battery load thus might be different.

I will try to explain it better with how my overnight drain is with different carrier and settings

Carrier A - voice and data set to 4G

Overnight drain with 0 activity - 20%

Carrier A - voice and data set to 3G

Overnight drain with 0 activity - 4%

Carrier B - no option of voice & data, shows up as LTE

Overnight drain with 0 activity - 4%

I am thinking the bug might be lying somewhere in these selections. I’d be happy to see if any users on EE and not seeing overnight drain can confirm they don’t see the Voice & Data under Cellular Data Options.

I’ve been through that tedious effort and now have a replacement device which still has the same problem. Apple senior support wants me to run diagnostics again on this replacement device and is not willing to connect me to engineering when I tell all their iPhone 12 Pros are throwing issues. I declined saying i don’t want to be a lab rat and will find a workaround myself.

Hello, your right ios 14.4 had not fixed the battery drain issue. I lose a lot of battery even with normal usage. With the kind of usage i have the phone should be able to last for about 2 days but thr fact that it at least lasts me a day is a really big thing. If apple is not interested in recognising the problem faced by its users, its time that we take some action. A company like apple is never expected to mess around with customers after charging 1000’s of dollars. Apple customer care, any moderators, if you are reading this and deleting this comment its of no use. Apple has already lost its market and theres no way its getting it back.

Finally as today I am expecting a call from the engineering team having said that yesterday I installed iOS 14.4 very surprisingly no drain happened last night at all,I can’t say the issue is resolved yet as I have already turned off all the notifications and background refresh including hey Siri so not yet very conclusive.. still very positive
