iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

Hi, there aren’t people with 0%. Apple iPhones have this strange feature that when you charge eg to 84 % it takes forever to get to 83 % but then draining resumes at a normal or fast pace. Those who are claiming that have 0 % battery drain, are charging the phone, unplugging it and then you using that as reference. To get a clear picture, charge it, use it until it loses 1 percent then use that as reference to measure overnight drain

Yes, I did. It is up to date.

It was 100% at 00:00 last night, took it off the charger, 98% at the morning at 09:00. From 09:00AM till now - 12:55PM with just 45 min Screen On (absolutely not touched besides that) is at 91%. I mean, it is not like I am losing like the other people 10-20-30% overnight (but it is a Pro Max model - which is not known to have any issues like 12 pro), but come on, for a phone that should be very durable with heavy usage, 7% for 45 minutes just chatting in messanger and reading articles... (without any games or videos or music or phone calls). For sure my 8+ had the same performance at least. All the time on Wi-fi, Cellular data is completely off. Europen model with only 1 sim.

I decided to listen some radio online while walking, so Airpods in en meaning not wifi but through ‘the air’ of course as I am outside walking. I listened exactly seven minutes, then decided to stop. In that seven miniutes my charge dropped from 95% to 82%... 13% drop in seven minutes.

I use 14.4 with latest modem software already a week (public) so it is settled in. Siri disabled background processe off.

Wath a bad iPhone this 12 is!

I have had this issue the past 2 nights and I haven’t a clue why, I charged my iPhone 12 mini to 70% went to bed woke up and it was on 20% I couldn’t get my head around why this was the case then i charged it to 80% watched one video in bed on YouTube then went sleep woke up and my phone was on 20% again, I updated my phone to 14.4 2 days ago and then this happened on 2 nights, I phone my network provider today and they said turn off bluetooth and location services and monitor it over the weekend, surely I shouldn’t have to do this as this as never happened before and why should my phone be draining 60% battery whilst I’m asleep, not happy at all with this, it needs sorting. I see a lot of people are having this issue, such a shame.

same issue here.....OK in standby (since 14.3) but with 14.4 RC (it was better with b2?!) it loses 1%/6min in a call whereas it was 1%/12min in the past!!!! And even when replying to some text or mailing it drops relatively fast......I ma quite sure that it was better with b2....

what is your experience during calls? (I think that it is due to the option of having 4g on during calls!!!)

cheers

You might want to refresh your knowledge about charging lithium batteries. Our batteries are the most happy between roughly 30 and 80 %. With the lower 30% zone, the zone were you want to avoid the most being in if you can. Letting it discharge below 5% is not doing any good, not extending its capacity and actually proven to accelerate wear on batteries.

I am spending a lot of time at home these days and I can be a bit of a battery freak....I even have an app that notifies me when my cellphone is charging through 80%, that’s when I unplug my phone.

I also use a 5 watt Apple charger to reduce heat when charging.

When the lockdowns are done, I’ll most likely be a little less careful, but will try to follow these good guidelines to preserve my battery.

I use a 5W Apple charger still too. It is plenty fast imh. Doesn't heat up the device at all, or at least I have not noticed. Also I barely use it while it is charging. I stay away from wireless charging because of the heat created by it and I don't see the point of it. → Creates noticeably more heat and takes way longer??!? So I do not entirely get the point of it. I will however get (or build it myself) some sort of Magsafe mount that charges simultaneously for my car as this is really a convenient thing to have. I have one of those magnetic swivel mounts that has previously worked with a thin metal plate that is either put onto the back of the phone or between the case and the phone and I absolutely wouldn't want to miss having that. Built-in charging capability would make it perfect, and having it right next to an air vent it can cool the entire thing also. But as of yet, there is only the Belkin which is a total hit and miss because it lacks charging and anything else offered at this moment in time is kind of cheap and doesn't satisfy my need.

Fun Fact: The iPhone 12 Pro charging with a 5W brick takes exactly as long as charging an 2018 12,9inch iPad Pro with the included 18W adapter.

Just as an addition to my last comment: I tested the Pixel 4a, which has 50% (!) higher battery capacity than the iPhone 12 Mini. Result: Youtube Video App drained the exact same percentage, as did browsing (1% drop every 5-6 minutes). Only calls via the carrier drained the Pixel battery about 1/3 less compared to the iPhone. Also, standby overnight (7 hrs) only drains 2-3% of the Pixel, while it is 6% for the iPhone.

So overall, compared to Pixel, the iPhone is pretty efficient but needs improvement regarding talk times. In average, I get 6.5-7 hours screen on time at home (mostly wifi) with ios 14.4 and still have 20% battery life left (Apple watch paired at all times, Airpods paired about 2 hours per day).

Wow, thats great! What is Normal use from your side? Can you please share a screenshot from Screen On for the weekend in order to get better overview (as normal could be 2,3,5 and even >6 hours per day for someone.

I get about 1,5 days with 12 pro max from 98% to 23-4%., avg 4h SOT per day. Today I tested my old 8+ fully charged to 100% at 09;35am and now 14;15 is at 90% with 2 hours screen on, which is a lot of usage for that period of time and the battery is really impressive. (however, i should mention that the battery has been replaced in 2020 (August).

but its a pity that my brand new 12pro max is exactly the same in terms of battery performance as the 8+. Maybe the bigger screen, oled display and new software drain much more even though it should be optimized to the max. Also the 8+ on idle does not drain a s**t. Nothing, nada, 0% for 15+hrs.
