iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

After a couple days of experimenting.

Let me give you scenarios/examples with no regard to any other settings other than those mentioned being turned on or off.

iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.3

SIM card installed, WiFi on, Cellular On, Bluetooth in Standby (Turned off in CC to disable new connections, but still enabled)

Battery drops between 15 and 30% over an eight hour time frame while not being in use. (This was the case for a couple days, until I realized something was clearly wrong)

SIM card installed, WiFi off, Cellular off, Bluetooth standby same as before

Battery drops around 10% over the same time frame (Better, but still not satisfying)

Now get this!

SIM card taken out, Wifi on, Cellular off, Bluetooth same as before, I also turned Airplane Mode on for the sake of it

Draining between 1 and 3% , over the span of 8 hours.

I know, it seems absolutely silly to use an iPhone without a SIM card, but as long as this bug is not fixed taking out the Sim card might be your best option to prevent your battery from draining over night. Or you just simply keep it on a charger. Keeping the SIM and at least turning off WiFi and cellular or putting the device into airplane mode should make the battery drain a little less too.

Some other things you might want to switch off, if only to test for a couple days to see if battery life improves and slows the drain. Keep in mind, you can disable everything temporarily and don't have to worry about anything breaking. If something needs a certain thing enabled, iOS will most likely give you a prompt anyways. You can go back and enable everything again, but until a version of iOS 14.3.x or 14.4 is released that addresses the those kind of issues, it's the best and to be frank, the only thing you can do.

  • Location Services > System Services. Be bold and turn off EVERYTHING. Toggle the status bar icon (the switch on the very bottom) so when you slowly enable them one by one again, you can keep an eye on what triggers the location to update. With the status bar icon on, you can check and investigate closely how and when a certain service is updating. I found the Find my iPhone location feature updates like crazy.

System customization also updates in the background constantly ( if you turn it off, Dark Mode/ Appearance will still be able to work in sunset/sunrise mode, night mode however will work only when you put it on a custom schedule, and optimized battery charging will not work (even the option itself in the battery menu is enabled) if you have Significant Location and/or System Customization disabled).

  • Put Bluetooth into standby so it stops searching for new devices (Toggle it via Control Center so the icon becomes white.)

  • Turn off 'Ask to Join Networks' and set 'Auto-join Hotspot' to Never in Wi-Fi settings to stop the device from constantly checking for sources, notifying you and trying to connect to other routers.

I don't mention any of those things like turning off Background App refresh, dimming your display etc as those can be found in literary every 'iPhone battery savings' video or article.

It is clear that the issue can be pinpointed to the cellular modem, which can only be put into completely pause if there is no SIM card in the device. Airplane mode alone does not seem to fix the issue fully nor does turning off Cellular data help much if anything.

I recently upgraded last month to an iPhone 12 and 1/2 way through the day weather I’m on my phone or not I have to recharge it. Even if it’s fully charged it drains throughout the night. The iPhone 11 I had I didn’t have to charge until nighttime. The battery life was great. This iPhone 12 battery drains even when not in use. I’m not sure what my options are. I’m hoping Apple can fix this problem.

Apple during their events, always mention that this year’s Iphone’s will surive for an X number of extra hours when compared to the old iphone’s, but this year apple didn’t mention anything like that this year. They just said that that iphone 12’s battery life with various options like video streaming, audio playback etc.

I also wanted to know if anyone has encountered this weird pattern of drain where the phone doesn’t fall a single percent when being used and then the next pick up you will suddenly see the battery is dropped by 3% and again you may use the phone for like 5 min and no drain and the next pick up after that another 3% is gone. This ideally happens once my phone is around 40%

which phone are you currently using and does it last you more than a day because you said your usage is very light. I have a 12 problem that last’s me for two days but with just 3-4 hours of screen on time. Camera and LTE consume a lot of battery for me approximately 1% for every 1-2 minutes of usage on LTE or usage of camera which is very bad. If the camera consumes 1% every min then why do i even use the camera. Even the camera causes to phone to heat up real quick.

They’re probably just playing around with you and wasting your time. As long as you close the app and don’t have background app refresh on it any app cannot have any background activity. Its just a fault with the iphone and nothing else. This is just apple’s game to keep their sales unaffected. They aren’t going to rectify it. Even if you prove that the app isn’t causing battery drain and the problem gets escalated to the engineering department I’m sure they will say that the phone has no problem. They even told me the same thing.

I had that same problem with the touchscreen on my 12 Pro Max. The Apple Store refused to replace the device under warranty, arguing that since the issue was intermittent, I could still use my phone at least some of the time. Apparently, that’s completely acceptable for an $1100 product.

The problem was that the oleophobic coating had worn off (this is the first time I’ve ever had this happen, upgrading my device every year). So I went and bought a bottle of Crystal Armor to restore the oleophobic coating, and my touchscreen has been performing normally once again.

It's not just the iPhone 12, everyone. I have the 11 Pro Max and I've been experiencing severe battery drain as well. Woke up this morning with a 100% battery. Took it off the charger, didn't even use it, then when I began my online class a few hours later, I noticed it had dropped nearly 10%, just sitting there doing nothing. My 11 Pro Max is about a year old and has always stayed on 100% for several hours until I finally see it dropping.

It's ridiculous that they come out with all these updates that do absolutely nothing but mess up your battery life. Don't they have beta testing before they come out with these horrible updates? If all of us are experiencing these battery drains, then they can't say they are isolated issues. I really hate my iPhone right now. It's pointless to have one if they keep messing up each update to drain your battery. I would much rather NOT have new features or tweaks and a battery that lasts all day.

I used to charge my 11 Pro Max once every 2 - 2 1/2 days. Now I am charging every single day as I actually watch the battery drop. Is this the throttling that I've heard about to get me to buy a new device?

I’ve got the same situation as you but like I’ve got used to it because like 2-2.5 hours a day i can get my 12 pro to last for like 2 days with a little more than 4 hours of screen on time. I’ve come from an iphone 6 but I’m pretty sure that that 2 hours of screen on time the battery shouldn’t drop to 70. Ideally how much battery should be consumed after two hours of screen on time?
