"PDE.plugin" will damage your computer

Tried to print a page from my iMac and received a message

"PDE.plugin" will damage your computer.

Can not print anything from computer now.

Also now my printer has a "?" appearing on its screen that won't go away.

Any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have an HP Laserjet 1012 and I'm running Catalina 10.15.4.

I also received the message about the PDE.plugin

I did the following:

1) I went to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and deleted my affected printer.

2) Went to System Preferences > Software Update and installed the HP printer update.

3) Went back to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and re-added my HP Laserjet 1012.

The only issue is what to do with the PDE.plugin file which still shows up in the finder.

Here is the fix for the odd problems with HP printing after the Catalina 10.15.7 update.

Go to System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners. Delete the HP Printer.

Go to your HD -> Library -> Printers. Delete the hp folder.

Reconnect your HP printer.

Go to System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners. Add the HP Printer.

System will auto update the required HP driver software.

You should be all set, as it was for me.

Good Luck.

If this is your only printer, in the printer settings the System Preferences, right click under the list of printers and choose, Reset printing system. This will clear all printer setup data, though I'm not sure if it will remove the HP subfolder from /Library/Printers/. If not, you can manually move that folder to the desktop.

Once done with those steps, install the new drivers. Then add the printer again.

Apple and HP have recently posted their own possible solutions.

If your HP printer doesn't work and you see a warning that HP software '...will damage your computer' - Apple Support

Within that page is a link to HP's page.

My guess is HP's uninstaller trashes the entire hp subfolder in /Library/Printers/, which would remove all of the now broken driver components. You then reinstall the drivers from the newer, working installers.

This is something I thought of mentioning myself before these pages existed, but was not keen on sending inexperienced users into the Library folder to delete things.
