rebooting macbook pro 2020

My new macbook pro is refusing to restart or shut down. On my old macbook I could turn it off if it became completely unresponsive, but I don't seem to have that option with the latest model as there is no on/off button. Any suggestions ?

Hi David James,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. Congratulations on your new Mac! We see that you're unable to restart or shut down when it's unresponsive, and we're glad to help.

You're correct that there isn't the typical power button on your Mac. Instead, there is a Touch ID button in the upper-right corner that you can press and hold for 6 seconds to force your Mac to shut down.

You can read more about that here:

Take Care.

Hello Chuck,

Can I followup on this question.

I seem to have the same situation. In my past MacBook Pros, 2012, 2016, when you shutdown everything just turns off properly.

In my case, my new 2020 Pro seems to still be turned ON, even if I shut it down via the Menu command. I notice this because I have an M-Audio Air USB interface and it shows from the LED that it is still on. When I press the touchid for 6 secs, it turns off. So it seems I always have to force shut down my new Mac ... (correct me if I'm wrong)

I also noticed another behavior when I do a Restart, that the Mac turns off, same behavior when I shutdown via the Menu, and it doesn't restart properly.

Kinda stuck here, appreciate any suggestions, thank you!
